One night, I was just sleeping when I woke up from the sound of my phone. I picked up the phone, and a low, male voice said to me that my mother had gotten a heart attack. As I quickly jumped in my jeans and shirt, I realised it was about 3am. I rushed over to the hospital, but wasn't allowed to see her yet. While sitting in the waiting room, I impatiently wiggled my feet under the chair and watched the second hand on the clock tick the minutes away.

About 2 hours later, I was allowed to visit her. I ran into the room, towards the hospital bed, but my mother was still unconscious. The doctors said to maybe get her some flowers for when she wakes up, which was expected to be any minute. I don't know why, but I decided to take the elevator. Probably because I'm not sporty at all, and I was in a rush. Stressed, I smashed the "ground floor" button repeatedly until the doors closed. With a shock, the elevator came in motion. This was one of these horrible elevators with mirrors everywhere; you see yourself too many times.

Unexpectedly, the elevator came to a halt. Small spaces have always been my weakness; not being able to go anywhere when something happens. It was like something had blocked the thing on the way. An ice cold shiver went down my spine, all the way down to my knees, like cycling to school on a cold winter morning; but this was different. It wasn't cold.

After a few minutes of waiting, I started pushing the buttons one by one, and when that didn't work, I slammed them all at once. I guessed there was a power cut, because nothing worked. In the rush, I had even forgotten my phone, which made me even more stressed. Small drops of sweat formed on my forehead and my lower back. My hands were shaking uncontrollably, like I was nervous. Or rather, scared.

I looked up in the mirror, and for a split second it seemed as my hand twitched. With gentle, small steps I walked towards the mirror. I raised my hand, and when I wanted to touch my mirror-self's hand, the walls started shaking heavily and I felt the overwhelming noise drilling in my stomach. loud bangs came from outside the cabin, as if someone was knocking on the mirrors. I backed up from the walls and stood in the middle, watching the walls come closer. Suddenly, it stopped. it was quiet for a while, and I was hoping all of this would be over and the elevator would just start moving again.

I could hear my own breathing in the room, though it was very quiet. I held my breath, but I could still hear it. An ice cold breath made my neck hair stand up straight and send a shiver all the way down my spine. I turned around, unprepared for what I'd see. In the mirror behind me, there was a girl. She was wearing a white long dress which seemed to be coming from the 17th century, her hair was silky, long and black and her pupils were extremely tiny. But when I looked at her eyes, the pupils were growing and had eventually drowned her eyes in complete darkness. I almost tripped over my feet and when I turned around, there was no one there.

Had I all imagined it? I thought so, until a hoarse voice whispered: "finally alone." The words kept repeating, every time a bit louder, every time a bit closer. "Finally alone." I didn't dare to look at the mirror. When I gathered my strength I glanced up to the mirror, I saw the black-haired girl. Her eyes were pitch black and the voice belonged to her when her lips formed the two words "finally alone." I froze as she was only a few meters away from me. She had a pattern while walking. Step, breathe, talk. I had no idea what she was saying, but I heard "come with me," and "I found you". Her scarred bare foot hit the floor again. Step, breathe, mumble. Every step she came closer. I just stood there, watching her step closer and closer. Step, breathe, mumble. Sweat was now running down my face and I was scared. There was nothing I could do. I backed up from the girl but my back hit the mirror and I couldn't do anything at all now. The girl grabbed my ankles and the last thing that I could remember was my head hitting the floor.

No one has ever seen or heard from me again. The police had confirmed my death, though it was still an unsolved case. But that you don't see me, doesn't mean I'm not there. Whenever you're doing your makeup in front of your mirror, I'll be there, watching you. Whenever you're preparing for a speech in the mirror, I'll be standing right behind you. Do you sometimes feel a cold breeze through the room? That's me. So, you might want to watch out next time you look at yourself. It might be the last.
