Walking into the gates, the crisp, morning, winter air nipping at her skin, Astrid looks at the school and breathed in heavily, preparing herself for another difficult day.
The morning began as it usually did. Shouting from her parents, her little sister running around, knocking things over, and Astrid being the only sane one in the house. She couldn't wait to get out of that hell hole. Unlike most her age, Astrid looked forward to school everyday. It was just another way to get away from home. Away from all the noise.
Saying this though, Astrid still didn't enjoy school as much as she'd hoped she would. She was classed as an outcast, yet she had no idea why. She herself found nothing wrong with her appearance, with her long brown hair and icy blue eyes, she fit into society's beauty standards. Perhaps it was the fact she didn't throw herself at any guy that looked at her. Either way, Astrid always dreaded going through those gates, almost as much as she dreaded leaving them.
She walked into the warm air of the corridors, filled with chatting and laughter that ringed in Astrid's ears. Pushing her way through the crowds of people, she made it to her locker and began unlocking it, until she got shoved into it by someone she had never seen before.
"Hey!" She said, trying not to be too loud so everyone heard. "You just pushed me!" The boy turned round, looked her straight in the eye and smirked.
"Hello there" He began "what a pleasure it is to meet you, I'm Carter." He held out his hand and winked at her. Astrid just turned round, ignoring his handshake.
"You're not going to tell me your name?" He said in a patronising tone. Astrid turned back around while rolling her eyes and started at him with a blank expression.
"No. I'm not." She said, a cold tone to her voice.
"Looks like we've got a tough cookie here boys" He said to his friends. "I'll just have to teach you a lesson then won't I?". He pushed Astrid into the lockers once again and trapped her between his arms. His face began to move closer and she could feel his warm breath on her skin. She roughly pushed him away and watched him stumble backwards.
"Don't touch me, asshole" she hissed as she walked to her first period and left him and his friends standing there, perplexed.
Astrid may be an outcast, but she isn't shy, and she doesn't easily get scared.
She made it to the classroom early, so she got out her books and started to doodle in them.
"Hey munchkin!" She heard a familiar voice as she looked up to see her best friend Lillie standing above her. "What you up to?" She leaned her head over to get a better look at what she was doing.
"Oi nosy," Astrid said as she pushed away her head lightly. "None of your business" she said as she closed her book so no one would see.
Lillie has been her best friend for 7 years, ever since their mums became friends. They knew everything about each other and never argued once. Lillie was the only one who stood by her through the times her life got tough. Astrid has always envied her. She had everything she wanted and a perfect family, her appearance was perfect too. She had long, glossy blonde hair, rosy lips and smooth soft skin. Astrid sometimes wondered why she was ever friends with her in the first place.
The class started filling up as the bell rang and everyone sat in their assigned seats. Astrid didn't have anyone sat next to here as there was one vacancy in the class, she liked it that way as she didn't have to make conversation and she could just do the work herself. Once the teacher walked in she told everyone to quiet down, and then someone walked in behind her. Astrid rolled her eyes at the sight of them.
"Today we have a new student class." She looked over to him. "Please introduce yourself."
"Hi my name is Carter, please take care of me." He said, suddenly he saw Astrid and winked. She just rolled her eyes. Most of the girls were giggling and squealing over him, Astrid just didn't see why. He made his way over to her and slumped down in the seat next to her.
"We meet again." He said, winking. In reply, she just sighed and rested her chin in her hands, looking at the front of the room.
This is going to be a long year she thought.
