Grinder of grain,
Mover of waters,
Grower of lilies,
Lover of Bluegrass,
Remembering the past.
They tell me you are too old, and I tell them yes, but that only shows that you are strong enough
to weather many storms.
They tell me that you are boring, and I say maybe to some, but not to me. To me, you are
peaceful.
They say that you are plain and simple, and I say yes, but beautiful.
And, having answered, I turn to those who scoff, and I say,
Show me another place so humble, yet so beautiful, that has worked so hard, yet never given up.
Turning her wheel and grinding her grain, she is a hardworking woman who sings as she goes.
Strong as an ox at his work, beautiful as the dawn approaching from the East.
Clothed plainly,
Turning,
Grinding,
Working hard,
Starting, stopping, and starting again,
Beside the pond, old joints creaking, singing,
Beside the hill, singing with the joy of living,
Singing the old tunes of Carolina,
Laughing and singing that she is alive,
Singing,
Singing with her strong southern voice, rugged, enduring, glad to be grinder of grain, mover of
waters, grower of lilies, lover of bluegrass, and remembering the past.
