Chapter Six: First Basketball Game

Start from the beginning

"So, I hear your first basketball game is tonight. Good luck, you'll need it." "Oh, ha, ha," Steve says giving her a fake laugh. Jessica giggles as Steve shakes his head at her. "Actually, I'm glad you brought up the game," he tells her. "Oh really? May I ask why?"

Steve nods. "I'm inviting you to the game," he tells her as Jessica's eyes widens. "T-that is if you would like to go? W-would you like to come and cheer me on?" he asks her, suddenly getting nervous.

Jessica's heart skipped a beat when Steve asked her to the game. She wanted to go but then Dustin popped into her mind. She had made plans with him and the boys to play D&D with them.

"I-"

She closes her mouth and watches Steve's facial expression. He had the look of nervousness on his face. She took a deep breath and smiles up at him. "Yes."

"Y-yes?"

Jessica giggles. "Yes. I would love to go to the game tonight and cheer you on." Steve smiles down at her. "That's awesome. I'll see you tonight," he tells her before walking off and meeting up with Tommy H. and Carol.

Jessica leans against the locker, smiling to herself as she became excited for her plans tonight. But her smile quickly drops as she thinks of how Dustin and the boys would react when she tells them she can't make it tonight. Letting out a groan, she turns around and lightly bangs her head against her locker. She stops when she hears the bell go off, signaling that she had about five minutes to get to her first class.

Hiking her backpack up higher on her shoulders, she turns around and makes her way to her first class as she thinks of a gentle way to let the boys down tonight.

It was now the end of the day as the students gathered in the hallway, bidding goodbyes to their friends as they head home for the weekend. Jessica was at her locker, placing the textbooks she would need for the weekend into her bag while Nancy stood next to her, talking about the game tonight.

Just as Jessica put the last book in her bag, her locker shut, making her and Nancy jump. Jessica turns to her right and sees Carol standing there with her hand placed on Jessica's locker.

She blows a bubble before popping it and smacking it back into her mouth. Jessica rolls her eyes. "May I help you?" Carol looks over at Nancy. "Beat it," she tells Nancy as her eyes widens. "I'll wait for you outside," Nancy tells Jessica before hurrying off down the hall, leaving Jessica and Carol alone.

Jessica turns her body fully, so she is facing Carol and folds her arms across her chest. "What do you want?" "Word around school is that Steve asked you to the game tonight." Jessica shrugs her shoulder. "So?"

Carol scoffed as she smacks her gum again. "So, you are the first girl that Steve has ever invited to his games." Jessica stands up a bit taller at what Carol had just told her. "Really?" Carol nods. "That's cool," she says but slugs her shoulders down, realizing how she sounded in front of Carol, one of the most popular girls in the school. Jessica unfolds her arms and grips the straps of her backpack. "I mean...whatever."

Carol raises her eyebrows and snorts. "Yeah whatever," she says mocking Jessica. "See you there," she says bumping shoulders with Jessica before walking away.

Jessica scoffs as she rolls her eyes. It was official, she now hated Carol. Remembering that Nancy was waiting outside for her, she quickly moves her feet down the hall and walks out of the school.

"What?"

"How could you?!"

"This isn't fair!"
