I slept that night. I hadn't slept soundly in a while, since it all started. I finally felt safe. I finally felt like I could survive.
I woke up that morning feeling refreshed and ready to go. I jumped out of bed, dressed, and headed to the cafeteria. Nathan sat at a table with a girl I remembered as Heather and a boy I didn't know. I looked around, searching for Ryan, only to find him with Jessica. I nearly gagged when I saw them playing tonsil hockey.
"It's gross, isn't it? They have been like that since the beginning," I heard Darren speak, before I saw him. He stood beside me, staring at Ryan and Jessica.
He looked almost cute, the way the light danced on his hair and how his forehead creased slightly, as if he were jealous. He had a slight grin on his face, still staring at the couple.
I shook my head, getting the thoughts out of my head. "They were together when this started?"
Darren looked at me, forehead creased in confusion. "Yeah, didn't you know? Before all this, they were gonna get married. This apocalypse stopped it."
I stared at him, shocked. I couldn't get over the thought. Ryan was going to get married, and he didn't tell me?
"Well, if you ask me, he's making a huge mistake. I'd rather have you," he said. I could hear the smirk in his voice. Well, clearly that's not going to happen.
"Well, clearly that's never going to happen," I voiced my thoughts. I crossed my arms, looking away from Ryan and at Darren. "You haven't even apologized for kissing me."
He smirked, grabbing my hand. "I'm truly sorry, Amy. But you must understand. I just couldn't help myself."
"Yeah rig-" I began but got cut off.
"Dead! They have pushed past the gates. They have invaded us!" someone said from the cafeteria door. Everyone stood, frantic and alert.
"It's the herd from before. Thay had to have followed us," I exclaimed over the commotion.
Darren still had a hold on my hand so he sqeezed it reassuringly. "Come on. We have to get out of here."
I looked around searching for Nathan or Ryan. I shook my head, coming up short. "I can't go until I find them."
Darren sighed, pulling me to the door. "What are you doing? We have to find Nathan and Ryan!"
"They are outside, already. They slipped out while you were in shock."
I gripped his hand, pulling us to the door, "You better not be lying."
