"Amara, are you ready?" Caleb called from the 2017 Skyline that was purring from outside of our cozy home in Maine.
"Just a second, Caleb! Christ, can't you wait for five minutes?" I hollered back. I pulled my sea blue hair back into a messy bun away from my cream colored skin. Still, a few tendrils drifted into my bright grey-green eyes. I tugged self-consciously at my black Slayer tank top. I patted my pockets to make sure I had my phone, and walked out of the house.
"Caleb, is everything all packed?" I asked, leaning on the rolled down window of the car.
"Yes! Everything's fine, let's go and start relaxing!!" Caleb said impatiently.
I laughed and crawled into our Skyline. I was just settling in when my mother, Teresa, stopped me as the car was about to leave.
"Amara, wait," she said in the soft silky whisper that was her voice. " Please, we talked about this. Please don't go...."
"Mom, I'll be fine. Don't worry about me," I assured her gently.
Still, despite my reassuring comment, worry showed in he grey-green eyes, and she looked down.
"I-I'll call you every night. I promise," I said, hoping to ease her worry, and my worry, too.
Why did she keep warning me? Why didn't she want me to go?
