I watched the rain drops on the car windows, like little trains on their tracks. "Kelsey are you sure you know where to go? We didn't miss a turn or anything?" I asked her this even though I knew she was lost but Kelsey was never the one to admit a mistake that she made, we all knew that. "Raina we're not fucking lost would you shut up so I can concentrate." That's when I saw it, the first sign that I should have left with the others while we still could. The tear, I watched it travel down her face just like the rain drops on the window. In the moonlight I could see her bottom lip quivering, the way it always has since preschool. I felt my heart pound as I looked at Josh, Lily, and Dalton, all sound asleep and unaware of the predicament. The thunder roared as the rain soaked the endless forest surrounding us. My knee slammed into the mini van's door as Kelsey delved onto the dirt road ahead of us. Dalton woke up, "What the hell Kelsey we should have been there 2 hours ago where are we?" Kelsey didn't respond but her tears, becoming more rapid now, said it all. "Kelsey please we just want to help you!" I said desperately, Dalton clamoring in, "Where are we Kelsey?" "I don't know okay. We're lost. Is that what you wanted to fucking hear? Well there you go were fucking lost and I haven't seen a sign of life in over 3 hours. I fucked up okay." Her words pierced the silence and suddenly Kelsey stopped the car and started bawling over the steering wheel, accidentally setting off the horn, disturbing the sound of silence outside the car. "That's what you have to say? That you 'fucked up' and you expect us to bow down and forgive you like we always do? Well that's not happening now Kelsey. I'm done. Good luck getting out of here on 1/4 of a tank." With that Dalton slammed the door and I saw him light a cigarette and start walking in the opposite direction, the moonlight illuminating his blonde Mohawk. I broke the silence and opened the van door, "Y'all are just going to let him walk? He's going to die out there." Josh and Lily followed me, stone cold silent and lost in their own thoughts.
"Dalton! We have to stick together you know you won't make it alone!" I ran after him, the thick black mud splashing back up at me, sprinkling my calves.
