•Brooklyn's POV•
First day of high school. I am definitely not prepared. What if I get lost? What if I grow apart from all of my friends? What if I never graduate?
Calm down, Brook, it's okay. Stop worrying so much.
Yeah, I'm right. I worry way too much.
"Brooklyn Marie Bradshaw! Get your ass down here now! You're gonna be late for school!" I hear my mom yell. God, she can be annoying, but I love her anyway.
I add one more layer of mascara on both sets of eyelashes, and admire myself in my mirror, rhetorically appreciating my mom for letting me change my style, and then I run out of my room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen, where I see my my mom making breakfast, and my dad and older sister sitting at the table on their phones, waiting for my mom to finish breakfast.
"Morning, Brookie," my mom says, turning and smiling at me. I playfully roll my eyes at the nickname I've had pretty much my whole life.
"Good morning, Mom and Dad. Carrie," I say. Dad looks up and smiles and Carrie just acknowledges me with a nod. Teenagers, huh?
"Hey, Caroline?" My mom says to my sister.
"What, mom?" She says annoyingly, not looking up from her phone.
"Can you take Brook to school? Your dad and I will be taking our breakfast to-go and don't have time to drop her off and it would be easier for you to just take her."
"Can't she just ride the bus?"
"She can but I'd prefer you'd take her, and I'm sure she would, too." I nod in agreement. My mom smiles at me in amusement.
"Ugh fine." Carrie says, sighing. What did I ever to her?
"Thank you. Okay, breakfast is ready." My mom brings over plates to me and Carrie, and two Tupperware containers for her and dad, along with the breakfast, and puts some on our plates and the rest in her's and Dad's Tupperware.
"You're quiet this morning, Dad," I say with a mouthful of eggs.
"I'm extremely tired. I didn't sleep good at all. How could I when the last bird in our nest is going into high school today?" He says, motioning me over to hug me.
"Aww Dad. I'll be fine."
"I know you will, but I won't," he chuckles. "It seems like just yesterday I was pushing you on the swing set in our backyard, or playing tag with you. Or doing anything an energetic child does."
"Believe me, Dad. It surprises me, too. How am I so old?" My mom and dad burst out laughing.
"Oh sweetie," my mom says." You don't even know what old is yet."
"You are very right," I say, and the three of us laugh, and even Carrie faintly smiles.
"Alright, let's go, twerp," my sister says to me as she gets up from the table.
"Okay. Love you guys! Have a wonderful first day!" My mom says.
"No boys!" My dad says to me and I laugh, but he keeps his stern look.
"No promises," I say.
And it really wasn't a promise...
