Mira walked into the kitchen to see Gregor with his face pressed against the window daydreaming. she had came into the kitchen to do something but she just couldn't remember what...

"Ergh." Gregor came off of the window and walked to the freezer and grabbed an ice cube out of the tray. She saw checkered marks on his forehead from the window screen. Mira, forgetting what she'd originally came to do, went over to the fridge and just stuck her head in hoping to get cooler.

Their mom had told them not to do this many times, but in this heat it couldn't be helped. She took her head out and saw Gregor had gone back to looking out the window. She knew he was thinking about camp and the conversation he'd had with their mom earlier.

"I'm sorry, baby, you cant go," Mom had said to him before Lizzie, Their younger sister had went to camp. "Someone has to watch Boots while I'm at work, and we both know your grandma can't handle it anymore."

They all knew their grandma couldn't do it. Their grandma, for a long time now, had been at one moment good as gold and the next telling them that she was worried about them because they had 'forgotten their lunch pails' when all they had done was go to the kitchen. She would also call Gregor Simon and Mira Gertrude, when they didn't even know who Simon and Gertrude were.

Gregor probably could have gone to camp a few years ago, their mom had only worked part time, and their dad, a high school teacher, was off summers. But since their dad disappeared two years ago, Gregor and Mira had a lot more responsibilities because they were the oldest.

So Gregor just shrugged it off like it was nothing and Lizzie went to camp and Gregor stayed at home. Mira on the other hand wanted nothing to do with the camp. Yeah, it sounded like fun but the outdoors, hikes, and not to mention mosquitoes, was something she did not want to be involved with.

So here they were, Gregor looking miserable, Mira with her head inside the fridge that wasn't very cool, and their grandma and boots in the barley Air Conditioned room.

"Simon! Gertrude!" they heard from the room. Mira and Gregor walked to the back room. Even being in there wasn't very cool. Their grandma was sitting on the bed covered in a thin quilt. Every patch on it had come from a dress she had made herself from over the years.

"Yeah, Grandma?" Gregor asked looking at the quilt. It is probably really hot under there. Mira thought. "Simon, you didn't forget your lunch pail, did you? You'll get hungry from plowing all day. Gertrude, I thought I told you to remind him."

Their grandma was raised on a farm in Virginia and came to New York when she married their grandfather. Gregor had talked to Mira about how it was probably cool how their grandma could go back to her farm.

Mira looked over at boots and saw she was sitting up in her crib. "Mi-ya! Ge-go!" She squealed. "Me out!" Boots lifted her arms and reached to Gregor.

He lifted her up and blew a loud raspberry in her stomach. Boots laughed and dropped her stuffed animal from out of her mouth and it fell to the floor. He set Boots down on the floor so she could grab it.

"Don't forget your hat!" Yelled their grandma still somewhere in Virginia. Gregor walked over to their grandma, "Do you want something to drink Grandma? How about a root beer?" "Ahaha," Grandma laughed, "A Root Beer!" What is it, My birthday?"

"I'll Be right back," Gregor said heading off to get a Root Beer for their grandma. Gregor took Boots' hand and they all went back to the kitchen.

Mira started playing a game with Boots, where boots would close her eyes and when she wasn't looking hid the stuffed animal, while Gregor was getting Root Beer for him and his Grandma and milk for Boots.

"Code!" Boots said happily and pressed her milk against her face. "Yeah, Boots," Gregor said, "Nice and cold"

There was a knock on their door interrupting them. "Who is it?" Gregor called through the door. "It's Mrs. Cormaci, darling, I told your mother I'd sit with your grandma at four." a voice called back.

Then Mira remembered what she'd came into the kitchen to do. "Gregor! Mira said to him. "The laundry!"

It looked like Gregor had forgotten too because his eyes went wide. He quickly opened the door. Mrs. Cormaci came in through the door looking as if she was about to melt.
"Hello, you! It's just awful isn't it? Let me tell you, I do not do well in the heat." She glanced at Gregor's hand, "Oh you dream, is that for me?" Without waiting for an answer she took the cup out of his hand and drank it down.

"sure." Gregor mumbled as he went back into the kitchen to get another. Mrs. Cormaci went with him. "So, when are you going to let me read your tarot mister?" Mrs. Cormaci has asked to read Mira and Gregors tarots multiple times but theyve never agreed. They knew she would ask more questions then they felt comfortable. Questions that they couldn't answer. Questions about their dad.

Gregor took Boots by the hand dismissed her question and said something about needing to do the laundry. Mira followed them down into the basement. Gregor looked lost in thought and Mira knew he was thinking of their dad. He usually thought about their dad.

Gregor and Mira both started on the laundry. They did this every other day. It was the same pattern. Gregor would put the clothed into piles and Mira would take the clothes out of the washer and into the dryer.

"Ball!" Boots cried out, "Ball!" Mira reached in between the two dryers and got out an old tennis ball. She picked some lint off and tossed it to gregor, who then, tossed it to the other side of the room so boots could go get it.

It went on for a while until Boots got quiet. Gregor and Mira both got up and Gregor saw Boot's sandal sticking out of behind the dryer. They started walking over and they heard a clunk and then a giggle from boots.

They walked over to her. "Hey Boots, whatcha doing?"

Normally I hate these things so I'll try to make it fast.
This was the most tiring thing I've EVER done. EVER.
Okay so that may be kind of a stretch. It wasn't that bad. Although I finished it, tried to publish, then it got deleted and I almost died.
Anywhooo I hope you liked it
