I was abruptly yanked out of unconsiousness by a bucket of freezing water being thrown on me.
Where am i now?
Sitting. BEHIND A DUMPSTER.
What have a gotten myself into?
A lone newspaper gently blew across the ground, the wind steering it in its unknown direction. i quickly snatched it and read the headline: Merman...missing? Possible suspects: *picture if Pheobe* Where is she?
Just that simple question got my thoughts reeling at the unknown answer. i nervously messed with a strand of my hair as the merman stared over at me expectantly.
That's how it's been for the past ten minutes. him staring, expecting me to say something, while i sat blankly, the wheels turning in my head for a way to "escape."
Without being able to stop myself, the questions slipped out like greese, " who are you? Why did you escape? what do i have to escape?!?" My voice slipped a few ocaves as emotion took over...
"What have you done! what have i done? How are we suppose to go back to our normal lives?!?!" what angered me more, was the fact that he still sat there, admitting defeat.
"What did i ever do to you?!
what have i done to deserve this?!?"
"Please." the guilt, stress, and pain buried beneath that word along with the pleading look etched apon his face not only silenced me, but completely cut off my rant. it was as if i had never been mad.
"I'm... not positive how to fix this. but, i have a vague idea."
Like thats gonna help.
I stubbornly shook my head in annyance as i paced around the dumpsters. my once white shoes had gone 50 shades darker, covered with mud from running through the damo roads of Key West.
I arrogantly kicked them off. i didnt want to see them. but, i did want to know one thing... "What's your name?"
"Name?" with the innocent look, and the confused tilt of his head, i knew he wasn't lying.
"Well, yeah. yah know... my name is Pheobe." i was only met with a blank stare. "didn't your parents ever name you?"
He shook his head in slight dissapointment.
"Hey, it's ok!" i assured, "i'll pick a name for you!"
He smiled up at me, hope shining through his eyes.
As i was about to respond, the faint police sirens could be heard a couple blocks away.
"Argh! C'mon!" i yelled, exasperated.
I gripped his still scaley hand, which i still have to ask about, and yanked him through The Pier. we quietly hud behind one of the very colorful tables as the cars slowly drove past us and back down Duval St.
"Ok," i said, trying to spark a conversation, "where are you from?"
Finally, an understandable answer tumbled from his mouth," just past the north spout." he answered, thinking i understood him.
"Spout? as in water spout? like a volcanoe?"
"I-i... i don't know.... I...i just really want to go home..." a stray tear trickled from his eye and the pair of blue eyes filled with frustrated tears.
"Hey, hey! it's ok! i'll make sure to get you back safe, ok? dont act like you'll never see home again please don't think that..." i trailed off, reaching out to pull him in for a hug. He hesitantly leaned into me, putting his arm around my waist.
We lay like that for awhile...hiding, waiting, until i began to slip into sleep.
The last thing i saw, was the merman's blue eyes gazing up at the appearing stars, as he hummed an unknown tune that followed me in my dreams.
