The Last Ones

The Beginning of the End

[Jack]

I carry my gear onto the transport ready to go aid the police of my hometown fight this infection that has spread the  country in a big epidemic, hopefully my brother and my daughter are safe and out of harm's way.  If they are still out there then Tony will be more than capable of keeping Lily safe until they can get to safety, I watched the camera screen inside the transport showing the gunner the environment we are in that is filled with hordes of those infected scumbags.  I am going to try my best to do my duty to god and my country and save as many innocent lives that have not been corrupted by the infection that I can.  I begin checking my gear, inspecting ever aspect of my weapon that could be the only thing between me and death itself while I'm out there doing my job.  As the ramp lowered I slid on my gas mask we had been instructed to wear incase the infection could be transmitted by air, I saw the nightmare that my hometown had turned into because of this infection.  I turned to see the rest of the squadron unloading off the transport securing their gas mask making sure they are functioning properly, I saw someone begin walking through the transport from a nearby alley way.  The figure seemed to be limping toward us, our squadron's medic began moving toward the figure in order to help him but when he got in reach of the figure he saw it was one of the infected.  Before the infected figure could harm the medic I raised my assault rifle and with a pull of the trigger I quickly sent the figure down for the final time allowing the suffering soul to go up to heaven.  The medic walked back over to me as I checked my clip seeing how much I had left in the clip, then as I slid the clip back into the rifle he thanked me for saving his life.  I quickly turned to the men from my unit that were now watching the environment for any signs of danger, I told them we be patrolling the streets that run in front of the police station making sure they are clear for civilians to reach the police station.  I thought about what I had just done, when I shot that infected figure I was doing it in order to protect a fellow squadron member but I did not think about what these people must have to do if they come face to face with one of these "things".  I began scanning around the area looking for anymore signs of activity, it seemed calm which relaxed me but I still stayed alert.  

[Tony]

I loaded the 12 gauge shotgun ready to deal with any dangers that stand with between us and safety.  Lily was hugging her teddy bear for dear life as we got ready to head for the police station, she was scared because her parents were not in the city and she was worried that her parents were in danger.  I was worried about my brother Jack because he is in the United States Marines and he might be trying to handle this infection, but I did make my brother a promise and that was to protect his daughter no matter what.  Lily looked at me with tears in her eyes as I slid the pistol into my leg holster, she was scared about what was going to happen so I kneeled down and as I stroked her head I said "it's going to be okay, mom and dad are okay and your uncle Tony is going to get you to safety but you have to be strong for me."  She stretched her hands out for a hug, I embraced her with a comforting, protective hug that made her begin to stop crying.  I picked up the shotgun, and I led Lily out into the city we use to call home until the infection turned it into a anarchy filled wasteland.  We began walking down the road toward the police station, she stayed close to me grabbing onto my forearm as I carried the shotgun in the other hand,

I thought about the monsters that were outside as I gripped my teddy bear tight with my right hand and made sure I was holding onto Uncle Tony with the other arm for safety.  I wondered if mommy and daddy were safe with all these monsters out here, it seems like a nightmare that you want to wake up from but all you can do is scream.  Uncle Tony told me that all we had to do is walk to the police station and we would be taken to safety, then hopefully we could find mommy and daddy.  I thought about daddy, he is a strong soldier that is not scared of anything, not even the monster that hides in my closet he makes the monster go away so I can sleep.  Mommy, she has the voice of a angel daddy says, she is a singer in Nashville Tennessee as a country music star, I hope mommy soon finds me, daddy, and Uncle Tony so we can all be safe together.  Uncle Tony and daddy could protect me and mommy from all these monsters out here who want to hurt us.   My 10th birthday is coming up and I hope all these monsters will go away so me, mommy, daddy, and Uncle Tony could all have a fun party to celebrate my birthday.  I have never seen one of the monsters but I bet they're pretty scary, we soon turn down a side street and I ask Uncle Tony if he thought daddy would be at the police station safe.  He told me anything could be possible, we kept going as I held on to my teddy bear, mommy got it for me when I was really little daddy said.  We head the street and I saw the bakery mom would take me to, we went there to get cookies for me to have a tea party with my dollies.  I heard a noise and whispered to Uncle Tony I heard something, he pulled me into the bakery that made me think of tea parties and my dollies who were resting safely in my backpack.  Uncle Tony was carrying my other bag as well as his bags, he made me go behind the counter and crouch down.  I saw him aim his shotgun at the door, he put a finger up to his lip which told me I had to be quiet.  I held onto my teddy bear tightly hoping it could bring back memories that could distract me from this nightmare.  He got me up quickly and went back onto the road after he thought it was safe.  We began walking toward the police station, and hopefully daddy is there.
