I ran by a familiar face and watched as it covered in surprise.

“Amber!” Noah called, but I couldn’t stop my legs from moving. I raced down the hallways, not knowing what I was escaping from but I kept going. Suddenly, I felt my back being pushed against a hard surface.

My scream sounded through the hallways as I thrashed in Drew’s arms. Luckily, I couldn’t see his face through my never ending tears, only his tall figure.

“Shhh, Amber, it’s me,” The voice said, and I immediately recognized it. I didn’t hesitate as I flung myself into Noah’s arms sobbing uncontrollably.

“Amber, what happened?” Noah asked pulling back to look at me. I whimpered, and shoved him back into me, sobbing louder.

“Amber, I need to know,” Noah said. I felt his body twist as he glanced around the empty hallways.

“H-he. Ca-c-car,” I said, unable to get any words out from my rapid gasps for breath. My breathing was fast and shallow, and it was making me dizzy.

“Hey, it’s okay. Calm down, okay,”  He whispered soothingly into my ear. I shook my head violently, bumping into his chest with each turn.

“Please, just take me home,” I said, surprising myself with the hard, firm tone of my voice. I pressed myself into Noah’s side so hard, I was probably hurting him. I heard the slight sound of laughter, which made my head shoot up and me press into Noah further.

“Noah,” I whispered warningly, nudging my head towards the laughing figure. I felt his arms tighten around me. It was a few moments before he spoke.

“What is he doing here?”

Noah’s POV

“What’s he doing here?” I asked, out loud. I angled myself between Drew and Amber protectively and glared at him. He was still laughing for some unknown reason and every breath was pushing me over the edge. Something in the back of my mind told me he had something to do with Amber crying like she was now, but I pushed it away.

Because I knew that if it was true, I wouldn’t hesitate before killing him.

“Hey friends!” Drew called out joyfully, jogging towards us. I pulled Amber even farther away from him as he neared us. “How’s it going?”

“What do you want Drew?” I asked, hoping my glare would pierce right through his skull and melt his brain.

“Just wanted to thank Amber,” He said, leaning sideways to wink at her. I ground my teeth together.

“Get out of here,” I growled, not waiting for his response before I picked Amber up and slung her over my shoulder.

“You know, you should stop acting like you have super-human strength, otherwise I’m going to start thinking you’re a vampire or something,” Amber mumbled into my shoulder. It was then that I noticed she had stopped crying as was now sitting silently as I carried her towards my car.

“Well you should stop being so beautiful, otherwise I’m going to start thinking you’re an angel,” I said honestly, chuckling. I ran my thumb across the heel of her foot, imagining her blushing face.

I opened the car door and placed her inside. I didn’t take my eyes off her as I walked around to the other side.

I started the car and gripped the wheel a little tighter than normal.

“Amber, why did he thank you?” I asked, trying to keep my voice calm and collected. As I waited for her to answer, to turn around to look for any cars behind us as I pulled the car out of its parking space. I would willingly miss the game for her, especially if she needed me. I made a promise that I would always be there for her, and I didn’t intend to break it now.

“I-I’m not sure,” She answered, her voice shaking. I looked over at her blushing red cheeks and how she avoided my gaze, all tell-tale signs of Amber lying. I looked back at the road.

Why did she even feel the need to lie to me? I thought I was being pretty open, accepting whatever she told me and comforting her? Why won’t she let me in?
“Do you trust me Amber?” The question slipped out before I could stop it. Well, I thought to myself, now that it’s out there, I might as well get an answer.

“Yes, of course,” She said, nodding. I stole a glance at her.

“Then why won’t you tell me what’s wrong?” I asked.  She sighed heavily.

“Because you aren’t going to like it,” She mumbled, her words merging together. My knuckles started to turn white as I gripped my hands tighter.

“Amber, I want you to tell me what happened. Now,” I said, my voice losing its soothing tone. I immediately regretted saying it as soon as I saw her eyes tear up. I reached over and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“Hey, don’t cry. I didn’t mean to growl at you like that,” I said softly. She shook her head.

“No, it’s not that. He just- I didn’t know how far he would take it,” Amber said softly, dipping her head to look at the floor.

“What do you mean?” I asked, starting to get scared as the worst images ran through my head. “What did Drew do?”

“He kissed me,” She said. I nearly spun the car around but thought better of it. There was no way I was letting her near him again.

“I’m sorry,” I said, looking into her eyes. But as I did so, she looked uncertain, almost as if she was decided whether or not to tell me something else.

“And he sort of tried to take it further, if you know what I mean,” She mumbled. For a second I was almost sure I imagined it, but as she looked away, I knew I had heard her correctly.

“He what?” I yelled so loudly it hurt my ears. I slammed my foot down on the brakes. My nails dug into the leather of the wheel as I struggled to regain my temper.

“He’s dead,” I said seriously, preparing to turn around.

“Noah wait! Please, just don’t take me back there, I don’t want to see him!” She cried out. I glanced over at her, my head still in my hands.

“Please just take me home,” She pleaded. I nodded and began driving once more.
