Chapter 1 - Welcome Home

"Come on mum! We can't be late!" Hermione called her mum downstairs.

Today was the day that she would be going back to hogwarts for the first time since the war. She was excited to see harry and her old friends. Ron, however, wasn't to be attending hogwarts for his seventh year as he went missing shortly after the war ended. He was so traumatized by losing Fred, he wasn't the same. Hermione's feelings for Ron had changed and she no longer felt the way that she did in the chamber of secrets.

Hermione placed her trunk in the back of the car and hopped into the back.

Harry carried his trunk through the gateway to the platform and then waited at platform 9 3/4. Hermione was never late as usual and jumped onto harry from behind.

"Harry!!" Hermione and Harry hugged.

"Hermione!"

"Its been forever!" they both pulled out of the hug.

"I know and this year theres gonna be more students with last years seventh years and first years, hogwarts is gonna be chaotic!"

"That'll be great!" They both laughed.

They heard the whistle blow.

"C'mon lets get on then quick!"

They both climbed onto the hogwarts express, found an empty carriage and waved goodbye to hermione's parents.

"This years gonna be weird." said hermione.

"I know, without Ron."

"I wish he hadn't disappeared, he could be anywhere."

"I know hermione. I just hope that he's safe."

They both made eye contact then looked away.

"How's Ginny then?" Harry looked up.

"Well.. I don't know."

"Harry, you can tell me anything you know that."

"I know. You see Ginny has changed so has the entire weasley family. With Fred gone and Ron missing, they're all.. different."

"But where did you stay all this time?"

"At the weasleys home for half of the holidays then the leaky cauldron for the rest."

Hermione shook her head.

"Harry! You could've stayed at mine, I'm sure my parents would've been fine with that."

"Its fine Hermione, It was quiet and peaceful and I needed that after the war and-"

"You don't need to go into detail Harry, I know what happened to you and I'm always here." They both smiled.

The Hogwarts Express arrived at Hogwarts late, Hermione and Harry both exited their carriage and made their way to the carriages. Hermione gasped. Harry turned around.

"What? What is it Hermione?"

"The Thestrals."

Then Harry realised the majority of the people in their seventh year would be able to see the thestrals after the war, as those that can view them have witnessed death.

"It's fine Hermione, they won't hurt you."

This was the first time that Hermione had seen the thestrals, it was odd. She was so used to seeing the carriages on their own.

"Come on Hermione." Harry grabbed her hand and led her to the carriage. Harry noticed that alot of the seventh year students were looking at the thestrals. It was then that he saw Ginny behind stepping into a carriage. He turned around to face hermione. When Harry stayed at the Weasleys it was awkward, It was depressing. Harry had to get out else he worried that he too might've stayed in the same state of grief as the rest of them.

"Are you okay Harry?"

"Yes yes, I'm fine. Just daydreaming."

"As usual." Hermione muttered.

"What did you say Hermione?" Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Just as usual, you were always daydreaming in class Harry! Thats why you were always copying my homework!" They both laughed.

The carriage came to a stop at the front of Hogwarts. Harry and Hermione stared at the building and how quickly it had been rebuilt, of course magic made everything quicker.

"It looks amazing, just like before."

"yes you're right Hermione."

"Welcome Home Harry"
