Who Wants To Live Forever
Will what poem I wrote
Or homework I didn't do
Even matter in the long run?
We'd like to think that our life was worth something
And our name and actions won't be forgotten
Like a box in the ground
Or baby booties in the attic
But, once we die, or pass on, or go to a better place
Or whatever we do
We take all that we are and all that we know
With us wherever we go
But, I'm not satisfied with that
I don't agree to being diminutive in the face of the future
A place that I will never see or know
But, will for damn sure know me
I, for one, do not agree with just living
And then just dying
No, I want to do something worth doing
And I want to die fighting for something
That I believed in even if others didn't
I want to be able to say that I've done something with my life
And didn't let it slip away into the abyss of tomorrow
I want to leave my mark on humanity
Not in the pages of some textbook
That gets shoved down a student's throat
No, I want to have a place in people's heart
Rather than be on a standardized test
I don't want to live forever
Where's the fun in that?
The point is not to live forever
But to do something that will
