I awoke to a light knocking on my bedroom door. Rolling over on my side, I looked at the clock on my nightstand. 2 AM. Ugh.
"What?" I growled at the person.
"It's Angie." Angie's my best friend in the entire pack. In human form, she's a tall girl with red, wavy hair, green eyes, and freckles. In wolf form, she's a medium-sized, razor-sharp toothed, green-eyed red wolf. I, on the other hand, am very different. In human form, I have light purple hip-length hair to match my name, a petite figure, electric blue eyes, and pale skin with rosy cheeks. In wolf form, I was a slightly smaller timber wolf with sharp teeth and blue eyes.
"What do you want?" I complained, getting up and heading to the door. I opened it to see Angie standing there, wearing her cropped Calgary Flames hoodie (for you non-Canadians, the Calgary Flames are a Canadian hockey team) and black jogger sweatpants. Her hair was in a braid resting on her shoulder and she was wearing her black reading glasses.
"Alpha Daniel wants the whole pack downstairs for a meeting, and sent me to get them. So... get up, I guess." She awkwardly waved her hand at me, signalling for me to go downstairs. Angie was never the 'authoritative' type. But, being the nervous person I am, I panicked a little. What could anybody have done to make Alpha Daniel wake the whole pack up at 2 AM?
"What's wrong?" I asked. "Maybe it's because I forgot to do my chore? What was it again?" My thoughts were interrupted by Angie's hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry, he seemed actually quite happy." She smiled at me.
"Oh. Well, if you want, I can finish waking everyone up." She nodded and disappeared down the hall, inevitably going downstairs to the meeting room. I adjusted the baseball shirt and sweat shorts I usually wore to bed and started down the bedroom corridor, knocking on doors swiftly.
"Wake up, guys! Pack meeting today!" As I walked through the halls, tired groans arose from the bedrooms. When I reached the end, I knocked on the door of Christine Parks. No sound came from her room, but instead the the door slowly opened, revealing her bedroom. On the bed the sheets were rumpled with nobody in them. She was always an early bird, but never this early. I shrugged and assumed Angie had already gotten her. I began following the other eight pack members down the stairs and into the enormous landing. While the group filed into the meeting room, the familiar face of Alpha Daniel towered above the rest as he slipped through the pack to greet me at the stairwell.
"Hey, Violet." He leaned against the banister, and I couldn't help but notice how he was completely awake. Despite my jealousy for his natural morning-person personality, my heart still fluttered at the sound of his voice. Yeah, I had a major crush on him, and I longed for the howl that would make him mine.
"Hi. How are you not tired?" I asked, trying and failing to suppress a yawn. He shrugged.
"Just who I am, I guess." His stormy grey eyes smiled at me with strands of his dark brown locks covering the corner of his left eye and he grinned at me, baring his perfect white teeth. I honestly loved how gorgeous a wolf he was when he was out hunting (trigger warning for vegetarians and vegans I guess..). His eyes would grow darker in shade and he would end up a large grey wolf with an intimidating stature.
"It's 2 AM." I rolled my eyes playfully and smiled.
"I know. Well, do you want to go in?" I nodded and walked into the pack meeting room, which was decorated basically like a hunters dream. Several large animal heads were mounted on the cedar wood wall and there was a welcoming fireplace with a fair amount of pack trophies resting atop it. I took a seat in a beanbag chair next to Angie.
"What do you think the meeting's about?" She whispered.
"I don't know," I said back, looking over and seeing Christine relentlessly flirting with Alpha Daniel. I rolled my eyes. "What could be so important right now?
"Probably just so-" Angie was interrupted by Alpha Daniel calling all attention towards him.
"Attention, BloodMoon Pack!" Everybody's heads snapped to the front of the room. Alpha Daniel walked in front of everybody, a huge smile on his face. He was holding the hand of Christine Parks, the same grin on her face. My heart dropped into my stomach when I realised what was going on. Our pack had made an agreement a long time ago, that every time somebody found their mate, we would hold a meeting as soon as possible. Several gasps started to come from different sides of the room, and goosebumps began appearing on my arms and legs.
"I would like to make a very exciting announcement." Alpha Daniel held up the hand that was holding Christine's. "I found my mate just about 20 minutes ago." Christine began to giggle. He gave her a look and she stepped forward.
"I'm going to tell our story." Christine spoke through elated giggles. Tears began to form in my eyes, blurring my vision. I leaned over to Angie, the only one who knew about my crush on Daniel.
"I have to go to the bathroom." I whispered, my voice breaking. I swiftly stood from my seat and rushed to the door, turning the knob and pulling it open. I darted out of the room, only to hear Christine's obnoxious giggling stop and Daniel call my name and say a few words that I couldn't hear. I was halfway up the stairs when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I blinked the tears away and turned around, to see Daniel looking at me, concerned.
"Are you okay?" He asked me. I simply nodded and started to walk up the stairs again. His hand wrapped around my wrist, stopping me once again. "Tell me what's wrong." I looked at him in silence, completely aware of the tears rolling down my cheeks. This may a good time to mention that I have severe depression. Depression can cause people to be frustrated and angry over some really stupid things. In this case, his complete ignorance of the situation infuriated me and I couldn't contain my rage.
"I'll tell you what's wrong. I met you six years ago, Daniel! Throughout all of that time you've never noticed how I really felt about you!" I yelled at him, but from across the house in the meeting room, they probably couldn't tell what I was saying. His confused look didn't change.
"What are you saying?" My eyes widened and I forced his hand off of my wrist.
"I love you, you moron! I've always loved you!" Then I turned on my heel and slammed the door behind myself when I entered my room. It was so loud that they probably heard it in the meeting room. Soon after, the sound of muffled conversation between two people came from the hallway before the door was opened to reveal Angie standing there. She looked at me, lying in my bed and curled in a ball, and she had the most pitiful expression on her face.
"Are you alright, Vi?" I got up and shut the door without a word.
"Goodnight," I whispered tearfully. She took the hint and I heard the sound of her footsteps heading towards the meeting room.
