I woke up to the melody of the usual birthday song. Today is my birthday. Getting up from my cozy bed, I caught sight of my parents decorating a cake. Smiling to myself, I headed for the washroom to get ready for the day. As the warm water pelted down, I gazed at my hands. Then my feet. Then I stared at the wall, hoping for something to happen. I flapped my hands. Nothing. Nothing happened. I groaned in dismay. Why. Why don't I have it. I just needed this in my life. I wanted to be like everyone else-- feeling mysterious, magical, and even powerful. I am turning 18 today. The officials claim that when you turn 18, your powers do not grow anymore. I tried to get the thoughts out of my head.
With a hopeful heart, I whispered to myself, "Hang in there, it will come. It will."
I changed my clothing and walked out of the room. Worries could never just simply vanish. With a loud sigh, I approached my family. My sister was there too. Like always, the beautiful girl will give me a high five as a greeting each morning. I looked at my parents. They looked nervous, full of worry, and scared. As soon as my mother's eyes met mine, she smiled at me. You're hiding something! I silently thought.
"Well, dear, happy birthday," my father said.
After the cutting of cake, the pictures, and savouring the yummy rainbow cake, I went out to meet my friends.
Nothing could be better then just roaming the streets out there, enjoying the breeze on a Saturday afternoon.
"Lumi!"
I turned around towards the source of sound. I smile at the sight of my friends.
"Happy 18th birthday!" The two of them yelled together with a playful look on their faces.
We laughed and I thanked them. Both of them have special powers. One can speak to animals while the other could teleport. They never really showed their powers to me, knowing that I do not have one yet. Or maybe that I will never have one. Of course, I have always been jealous. We are all 18 years old this year.
Why don't I have it? Why don't I have powers?
After a short chat with them, we parted ways. When I returned home, I was in shocked to see the officials in our house. Oh yes, I remember. They would go to the houses of the 18 years old children on their birthdays to check if they have powers and to accept them as a real citizen into their world. My parents and my sister all were accepted. They have powers, and they know I don't. By the age of 19, if you don't have one, you will depart to another world, where you would never see your family and friends again. Never.
"She doesn't have powers," The officials say as I look around, dizzy.
They made me eat a small tablet that would make me show my powers if I have one. "She has one more year for her powers to develop. Some children only get their powers during this period of time though powers do stop developing when you turn 18. I guess we will meet again in a year's time." I looked up and saw my parents nodding quietly as my sister kept her eyes on me. After they left, I returned to my room and slammed the door shut. Why. This word just stays in my head. Why.
