Portia was a rich and beautiful heiress, who lived in Belmont, near Venice. She was young and unmarried and among her 8 suitors surprisingly she cared for none of them The only mane she was all interested was Bassanio , a young Venetian. But unfortunately he had no money, not even enough to take him to Belmont. Do he went
To his friend Antonio,a rich and generous merchant and asked him to borrow three thousand ducats ( about ten thousand pounds ) But all Antonio's ships were at the sea.
And until they returned with their merchandise he had nothing to lend. He therefore proposed that they tried, on the credit of his ships, to borrow the money from shylocks,
A money lender .
Together they met him on the Rialto , near the grand canal, where the most Venetian business was transacted.
The fight between shylock and Antonio was about, as a Jew Shylock belongs to an outcast race, despised and ill treated and forced to wear special clothes and to live in ghettoes away from the Cristian community. No wonder that he hated Cristian's, specially Antonio, who had always treated Shylock with brutal scorn and was forever complaining about his bargains and hard-earned profits
' You spit on my cloak and kick me from your door as if I were a dog, '
said Shylock passionately. 'And now you come on your knees to me and
Beg for money. Why should I help you?'
'Will you not lend it as an enemy, not as a friend?' Said Antonio angrily. 'Then if I go
Bankrupt, it will give you pleasure to make me pay the penalty.' Said Antonio
So far Shylock had not given the merchant a direct answer. But suddenly Shylock
Saw a cunning way of destroying him, and at once he became freezingly polite.
'Of course I would like to be friends with you,' he said,
I will forget all the insults you heaped on my head. I will give you the sum u asked me
With no interest. But first you have to come to the lawyer and sign a bond
