I raised my head to find that the sun had finally gone down. Great, I thought to myself. I was still adjusting to this new lifestyle and I know Kathryn was as well. She seemed to be more okay with it, but she still wouldn't tell me exactly how it happened. She always shrugged me off saying that she didn't remember or that she didn't want to talk about it. My memory was fuzzy, but I still remembered the day it happened. How could I forget? Who would forget the day that they were turned into a blood lusting creature, a nightwalker, a supernatural being? A vampire. That's what I was now. That's what we were now. It's still hard to think about it. I'm undead now. I no longer exist to any of the people who knew me before. I'm a forgotten body on the side of the road or tossed into the water to flow down the river. I am unimportant to the world.
I was past the stage of feeling sorry for myself, it had been about a month now. We now live in a small town named Ligonier. It was a pretty nice town in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Population was really low, which wasn't ideal but for every other reason it was nice. Even though the population was very low, me and Kathryn didn't get out much and our house pretty much looked rundown. We didn't have much inside, just a few things here and there along with out beds in our rooms. It was a two bedroom, one and a half bath and it was pretty cheap and decent. I liked it, Kat more so just went along with it, she didn't see why it was a big deal. I still didn't fully understand her, it had been a month and she hardly told me anything about her human life. It's like she wanted to forget it. She never mentioned friends or family, she never even mentioned what kind of foods she used to like. She used the excuse saying that she wanted to keep the past in the past and that it wasn't important anymore.
What she did tell me, wasn't very meaningful. She said she was a senior, so I enrolled her in the local school. She also told me she was eighteen and that she didn't care much for other people. The rest I just guessed about her, grabbing whatever information I could on her. Even without knowing her very well, I still cared about her. She felt like a younger sister to me, a younger sister who ignored my sisterly advances, but still a little sister all the same. I went up to her room and knocked on the door as I slowly pushed it open. She was sitting in a chair by the window, typing away at her laptop. She looked up at me and raised her eyebrow.
"Yes my older sister in training?" She said with a blank face. One thing that I loved and hated about her was a her sarcasm. Sometimes I couldn't catch it, and other times it was just the wrong time for it. I smiled at her and walked in the room towards her. Her long black hair was tied back in a loose french braid like it always was. She was pale, well she was paler now. Her ears pointed a bit at the top. She had on a chopped shirt and baggy pj pants that matched. Her eyes were amazing to look at. She was the first person I had ever met with two different coloured eyes. One was a beautiful blue while the other was a deep gray. She normally kept the gray one covered with her hair. She said it made her look like she had an extremely bad lazy eye. It didn't.
"I'm going to go out. I'll bring yours back with me, okay?" She nodded and went back to typing on her laptop. She was writing, she loved writing. She would never let me read anything she wrote. If I even looked at her laptop too long she'd freak out leave the room with it.
"Oh great, I love delivery. If it takes an hour, do I get it for free?" I rolled my eyes at her. I didn't let her feed from people, because from the moment I saw her, I knew she had control issues. Her temper was out of this world and she had no patience.
"I'll be back in a few hours like always. I'll make sure it stays warm for you though." She didn't look up at me, just nodded and kept typing. I ecosted myself out and down the stairs to the door. I felt the breeze hit my skin, it felt great.
Last night I had went out to get school supplies for her, she started in a few days and I wanted her to be ready. I made up the story saying she was my sister and that we moved after our parents died. Classic story, but still worked. I followed up by saying she was home schooled, but she was well caught up. From watching her, I noticed she was very smart. I even questioned it when she said she was only eighteen. She looked the part, but her mind was much older. Maybe even older than I was. I had just turned 24 a few months before, I remember because my friends had she huge party for me and I loved it. It was great. I missed them. I could tell that me and Kathryn were opposites in that way. I don't think she had any friends, and if she did, didn't miss them as much as i missed mine. Then again, this could be her way of grieving.
I noticed after I became a vampire that all of my emotions were heightened. Kathryn agreed that it was the same for her in that regard. That meant she was probably the same way she is now. I assumed she had a past of angry issues, because sometimes she had major temper tantrums and mood swings. We have what we call our "dark form" when we get angry or smell blood. She looks terrifying, like she's going to try to kill me. I'd be lying if I said that she didn't scare me. On the other hand, I feel like she wouldn't. She said she was all talk and that she would never hurt anyone because she had never hurt anyone before. She told me she just had anger issues and that blowing up was pretty much the only thing that helped her, minus writing.
It was around seven and I had made my way to a night longue. I knew a good bit of people in the town, they always greeted me as I entered. There was a guy that was always here when I came, pretty much waiting for me to show up so he could talk to me. It was cute that he acted this way towards me. He was the first to greet me tonight. He was tall and chubby, his frame pretty different from mine. He had darker brown hair, while mine was lighter. Up until recently I had dyed it almost black. My light brown hair looked very strange close to my skin, although I wasn't pale. I had gotten lighter since, but mostly because I couldn't tan. His eyes were a simple grass green while mine were a dull brown. In my human life I normally wore green contacts.
"Hello Jodi, surprise seeing you here." He said with a big smile on his face. I smiled back and nudged his shoulder.
"You see me here every night, Wesley."I said to him. He bowed and put his hand out in front of him.
"But it's always a pleasure to see you back here each night." He stood up and gave me a quick hug and walked back behind a counter. He worked nights here, tending to the guests. He always offered me food, and I took it sometimes to be nice and show I appreciate it. Food didn't fill me up anymore, and I couldn't taste somethings. Kathryn's body rejected the whole idea of food, and it would make her really sick. I could at least still enjoy some of the foods I loved, while the only thing she can have is blood and water. Sometimes I'd freeze it and make her something of an sno cone. It gets me a chuckle out of her.
"How was your rest? How's your little sister doing? She excited to finish her first and last year of public schooling?" He asked me. I sat down at one of the stools at the counter.
"I slept fine. And oh, She's doing fine, just her normal quiet self. She's been writing a lot lately. I'm not really sure how she feels about the school thing. She doesn't argue about it, but also doesn't voice her opinion when I mention it." I said. It was true, she was pretty indifferent about the ideal of school. He set down a glass of iced lemonade in front of me and a small plate with a few cookies on it.
"Want a few more for her?" I shook my head, Kathyrn didn't want to try anymore foods. She had tried once and gave up on the ideal of food.
"How's work going so far?" I asked him. He nodded and moved his hand to the side. After that it was just more of us talking and him catching me up on what he had done during the day. I enjoyed talking to him, he always told me about how the weather was that day, and if anything exciting happened. During his break we went outside to sit on a bench. I'd swing my legs back and forward and he'd just look at me. I gave him small kisses on the cheek and it made him blush. He was a great guy, but I couldn't escape the feeling that I would complicate things. In this month I had learned a lot, I could resist hurting him, but could I actually be with him?
"What are you thinking about?" He asked. He put his hand on mine and gave me his full attention.
"Us." I answered honestly. He instantly started to blush but he didn't take his hand away. He got closer to me, and i gave him a small smile.
"About how we care about each other? Because I really care about you.. You mean a lot to me. I know it's only been a month, but it's been amazing seeing you every night." He stopped and turned away a bit. His face was bright red. I gave him another kiss on the cheek and turned him back to me.
"You mean alot to me too. I love spending time with you." I didn't expect him to kiss me but he did. It lasted about a minute and it got harder for me to control my heart rate. He was too close and I could smell his blood. Luckily he looked down at his phone and noticed his break was over.
"Shit, I've got to go. But I'll see you tomorrow night?" I nodded.
"Always, handsome." I said watching him walk back into the building. He turned back when he got to the door, giving me one last smile.
