The Phone Call

"Cynni, this new couch is adorable.. It brightens the place up so much!" I said, kind of jealous.

"You think so? I thought it was a bit of a  weird purchase.. Already having a couch and all." Cynni said, doubting herself, as usual. I decided a topic change would be best.

"Did you hear about that new girl?" I asked in a gossip-y tone.

      "New girl?"

"Yeah.. She was moving in yesterday, into that little cottage up the hill. Good thing, too, its been empty to long."

"Yeah.. I 'spose you're right. New people on the island couldn't hurt. But that cottage? Who would buy that? I didn't know it was even up for sale anymore, its been there for decades.."

"Then its about damn time someone moved in." I said, goofily.

Then Cynni's phone rang. "Ah, hold on, Livvi, I have to take this." She stepped out of the room. I hated being alone in someone else's house. It felt so.. wrong, like I was intruding. She had a candy bowl on the coffee table, filled with butterscotch's. I helped myself to one. It melted on my tongue. I looked around. She wasn't back yet. Why would she take so long? Was it a family member? I was really the only friend she had, due to the island being so desolate.

I started to tap my fingers on the back of the couch. It was a soft, plush couch. A beautiful burgundy color. I wrote my name in the couch with my finger. It was raining outside, and the tap on the windows was elegant. Maybe when she gets back we can play in the rain? This phone call seemed to last eternity. I fiddled with the sleeve of my shirt. Then the tap on the windows seemed less elegant, and more rude. As if it were invading my very mind. I took another butterscotch. It melted on my tongue as the previous one had done.

The thumping on the windows was almost driving me mad, now. What at first was comforting had turned into a nuisance. Phone calls don't usually last this long.. I checked my watch. Twelve minutes had gone by. "It ought to be family she's talking with," I thought.

The rain was really getting annoying, now. It felt incorrect, but I couldn't fix it. At long last Cynni came into the room.

Something was wrong. Her body language was sad. She walked slow, which is not like her.

"Cynni? You okay? What was that call about?" I asked in a concerned tone. She looked up to reveal that her eyes were red, likely from crying. "Cynni? Tell me what's wrong."

"A while ago I visited the hospital."
