I awoke suddenly to my sister Ava jumping on me screaming, "Wake up Liam, its our birthday!!" I just roll my eyes and get out of bed thinking good it was just a dream. She ran down stairs telling our parents while I sit and think. Today is the day we turn 17 on the 27th of January 3033. I went into the bathroom, looked in the mirror and told myself everything would be okay. I jumped in the shower to calm my nerves. Relaxing in there for a bit I got out and put on my usual outfit; long sleeves, hoodie, and dark colored jeans. No matter how hot or cold, I always wear that cause it looks best with my big green eyes and long hair.
Starting today was the first test of my parents experiment, they are scientists. In the 3000's your parents dictate what you become when you grow up. Say your father is a carpenter and your mother is a doctor then you would have three choices; Medicine, Carpentry, or Military. They sure paved the road for us since they were both scientist. Ava and I's career choices were limited to Science or joining the Military. We are very, very good at science though, so we plan on going into the science field and working with our parents at a secret facility. The facility test things that most people don't even know exist. To work there you must be recruited.
I walk down stairs getting a happy birthday from my mother and father as they walk us to our bus and kiss us goodbye, I turn around and yell, "Good luck with the experiment!" They wave us off as our bus starts down our road to pick up other kids and head to high school. Ava sits next to me as usual, she, on most days, is talking up a storm but today she was quiet and so was I. We were nervous, we know how bad our parents experiment could go and what would happen if it did go terribly wrong.
Arriving at school was always an odd experience, Ava and I usually meet up with our friends but this time we went straight to class awaiting the phone call that was due. Our parents experiment was going on at this exact moment and we were starting school? "This is so wrong," I said to Ava as she stared off into space.
She then replied, "I know, we should be there with our parents." We left it at that and pulled out our phones occasionally stealing terrified glances at one another. The phone never rang. This was either a very bad thing, or they forgot which never happens. Once class was over Ava and I ran to the door. School was very short for people that are becoming scientists, only a couple hours every other day. Together we ran towards the bus wanting nothing more than to arrive home and see our parents, but what we saw was the opposite of a good thing. There were a couple of facility cars awaiting our arrival.
Ava and I slumped off the bus not wanting to here the bad news. We had no idea what to expect, our father approached us with a depressed walk. Dreading his arrival, he spoke, "Your mother, she was sucked into the void. She has been presumed dead." I fell to my knees stricken with grief. Our mom is dead, I thought to myself silently. Ignoring every ones apology I ran to her and my fathers room and laid on the bed sobbing. She is dead, I kept repeating that in my head unable to tell if this was a dream or reality.
A couple hours went by and no one came to check on me. It felt like no one gave a fuck about me, if I was okay or not. I hit myself in the head hoping I would wake up from this terrible nightmare, but my failed attempts to wake up made me realize this is not a dream. I didn't want to leave the room but knew Ava and I had to do something. We had to get our mother back. I could feel her, she wasn't dead. I walked down the stairs to see Ava on the couch. One glance and I knew she felt the same way about mom. We were going to get her back. We told our father we were going to bed.
