When she woke up that morning in her small studio apartment, she didn't expect to wake up alone.

For once, panic didn't fill her body. Usually when her lover wasn't beside her, she prepared for the worst; but now, she just assumes they were out doing something. They woke up early to surprise her with breakfast. Work called, and they had to come into the office as soon as possible. She felt safe and secure in her relationship. Not once did she ever think her lover would flee.

After making the comfortable bed they shared, the grey jersey comforter looking enticing, the girl padded off to the cute kitchen, donning only a button down shirt she borrowed the night before. Her long brown hair had been tied into a messy bun, just up to keep it out of her face, and her bare feet made a definitive sound against the wood floors. She retrieved her breakfast from the refrigerator, a bowl of fresh strawberries paired with a glass of orange juice mixed with champagne, and headed back to the bed.

The girl sat down on the center of the bed, tucking her legs beneath her bottom and gazing out of the amazing view they shared from the window. When they bought the apartment together, she could see herself spending every morning like this, with the view. You could see the entire city from the large window, and it was the perfect sight to wake up to.

She grabbed her phone that sat beside her and dialed her lover's number, holding the rather large phone to her ear and munched on a strawberry. On the third ring, her beloved answered, their voice barely above a whisper.

"Hey, where are you?" the girl asked, a smile creeping onto her face from the sound of their voice. She took another bite of a strawberry, listening to her partner's reasoning.

"Oh, okay," the girl laughed, finishing off one strawberry. "I didn't realize your mom even woke-"

Behind her, the apartment door opened, revealing her lover. Bags beneath their tired eyes, a smile that shone as bright as the sun that morning plastered on their face.

"My mother and I had something to talk about," her girlfriend said, startling the girl and causing her to drop her phone. "It was a kind of, gotta-do-it-now moment."

The girl laughed and crawled over to the other side of the bed and rushed into the arms of her girlfriend, planting a sloppy kiss on her lips.

"What was so important?" the girl asked, pulling away from her girlfriend and gazing into her eyes. "You didn't leave a note or-"

"I know," the girlfriend began. "I'm sorry. I should've." She smiled and gazed into the eyes of the girl, reaching her hand up and brushing the pad of her thumb against the girl's cheek.

"But, like I said, we had to talk about it as soon as possible."

The girlfriend suddenly got down on one knee, pulling a tiny black box out of her pocket. The girl's hands instinctively covered her gaping mouth, breathing out an 'oh my god'.

"The ring, it was my grandmother's," the girlfriend began, laughing as she struggled to open the black box. When it finally did, a stunning ring with great detail nestled in the velvet was revealed, the ruby that was cradled in the center standing out to the girl. "I h-hope you like i-"

"It's beautiful," the girl gasped, getting down on her own knees. Her brown eyes never left the sparkling ring, and her hands never left her mouth.

"So, I guess, I have to ask," joked the girlfriend.

"Will you marry me?"
