Hugh
The thought of Steve's charming smile warmed Hugh's heart as he curled himself up in the sheets, like a shield from the cold night. The cold shivers that trickled down his spine as he closed his eyes led him to toss and turn. The nights were always cold on his own, which was usually the case.
He'd only properly spoken to Steve this morning, he was working at the new take out on the corner, but there was something about his required smile that seemed so sincere and loving when he was talking to Hugh.
They both knew each other vaguely from the footlights, Hugh was very loud and was very over the top but Steve was more cynical and reserved. They'd made conversation on the odd occasion but it was always nerve wracking and Hugh had to pull himself away from such an awkward exchange. He scratched his wrist when his nerves and anxiety got to him, it was raw after that talking properly to Steve. His dark, little curls and his adorable smile, Hugh couldn't help but think about him.
Steve
"He was cute." Steve smiled, whilst pouring a shot of whisky into his cup. He didn't usually drink alcohol but today he felt as though he'd earned it, in a way it was almost a celebration. Seeing how nervous and flattered Hugh was when they were talking earlier, he felt like he might actually have a chance with him, that angel.
"I'm getting ahead of myself." He sighed, propping his feet onto the small table in front of him. He stretched for the remote and pushed it back down after he saw what was on.
"The Great Escape? You know what? I'll just sit and think." He yawned before closing his eyes and listening to the night.
Hugh
Hugh stalled when his eyes caught sight of a sign being plastered onto the window of new takeaway.
CASHIERS WANTED
See manager for details or call us at on 01573 4629
"That's what Steve does." Hugh thought before pushing open the door. He walked past an elderly man, who was flicking through a newspaper. He liked looking at people, not in a creepy way, in a way that suggests he's interested in people. He didn't talk to a lot of them, he had a few friends but they didn't talk all that often, he liked Steve but too much to make casual conversation.
"What do you want?" Asked the girl, slumped against the counter. Hugh analysed the name tag,
"Um, Jenny? It's about the sign."
"I'll get the manager." She rolled her eyes and left.
The door swung open and Steve ran in, Hugh's heart started to move at an unbelievable pace.
"Hugh?" Steve smiled.
Wow, his smile.
"Oh, h-hey Steve." He shook and stammered.
"What are you doing here? Wait is it about the job? I hope it is. Working with you would be amazing."
Hugh could only nod awkwardly as he could see the nerves were getting to Steve too.
Steve
"Oh no, fuck off anxiety."
He twiddled his thumbs and played with his face. "Compliment him, do something, Steve!"
"Your eyes are really cool."
"What?" Shit, did I choose the wrong thing?
"You're eyes are beautiful, blue like the ocean."
Steve saw Hugh's face tremble and smile.
"Stop it..." Steve's heart warmed when he noticed Hugh stop scratching his wrist.
"Do you do that when your nervous?"
"Oh, scratching my wrist? Yeah."
Hugh
"Stop it..." Hugh thought to himself "you're making him feel awkward."
Steve looked down and back up at Hugh and leaned in.
"Hey, Hugh is it?"
"Yeah." Hugh rolled his eyes as he pulled away from Steve- he didn't even get his kiss. He turned to see a smiley man with short, dark hair and a bright yellow sticker plastered across the right of his chest.
Hi, I'm Mark!
I run this joint!
"I see you've already met Steve, friends are you?"
"I guess you could say that." Steve blushed.
"Well there's a space in the same shift as him, if you want it of course."
"Yeah, I'll take it."
