It all began with a sound, an unexplained sound, the night when the gestapo came, the night of broken glass.
My younger sister, Anna, was moaning " Lena how much longer will this go on?" She wined, she started telling me how much she misses her friends and the ability to walk outside in daylight with the sun on her face and the soft fresh breeze in her hair. Now the only real sense of outdoors is the skylight, I try to keep it open as much as possible but it all comes down to our safety. I wanted her to be safe that's all, I know my parents would have wanted me to look after her, unfortunately our parents were taken away from us by the demons, the Gestapos.
I became more alert as I saw through the skylight our neighbour, Mr Grabinksi, and his family forced on to trucks like cattle. Their shop windows were smashed. I tried to comfort my sister, but it was hard as I was also terrified. I told her that we would be safe, I told her that Mr Schindler would helps us, I informed her about how our friend, Katya, and her father were driven to the factory only yesterday. I continued to comfort her. I started to pick up my violin and began to play, the song my mother used to sing to put us to sleep.
She started to sing to the music while she started to fall into slumber, she was so peaceful, lying on my lap slowly drifting off to sleep.
But then I began to hear bashing at the door down stairs. Anna woke up instantly, eyes wide mouth slightly open and her face full of fear. The bashing coming from down stairs grew louder and louder, making the house shudder. Our house was being destroyed right beneath us. I didn't understand, how could they have found us, how could the Gestapo find us. Then I realised I had left the skylight open while I was playing. They must have heard our song. "Listen...Anna...the door...they have come, you must hide quickly through the skylight."
I whispered to Anna, "I won't leave you Lena, I won't go without you!" She said.
"OPEN THE DOOR, I COMAND YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR!" The Gestapos shout rang through the attack.
