How It All Started

"Carly...psst!" My friend Heba whisper yelled at me in the middle of our media lit class. The teacher was out sick that day and so the substitute teacher, that oddly resembled a prune, gave us all a study hall period.

My mind was somewhere else but my hand aimlessly dragged my red Pilot pen over the blank surface of my spiral notebook.

"Carly!" She whispered louder. Snapping out of my gaze I turn to face her to she what she wanted so bad. She was dressed in her usual; black skinny jeans, black and white striped sweater and a black hijab. Just adorable.

"What, babe?" I asked.

"I think Joseph is checking you out or something. He's been staring at you the entire time. Even when Sophie tried to snap him out of it he brushed her off."

"Heba, I don't think so. Joseph could never, and I mean never like me. It's like you don't even know him or me." I said while rolling my eyes at her "observation".

"Carly, listen to me. I know he wasn't staring off into space because he would blink and usually when people are gone like that, they don't blink. I'm telling you, Joseph was checking you out."

I brushed her off with a laugh and the wave of a hand.

Digging through all the shit in my hoodie pocket, i.e. Phone charger, wall plug in, money for lunch, chapstick, etc., I finally found what I had been looking for.

My headphones.

I grabbed my phone from off of the cool wooden desk and plugged the headphones in and pressed play on my favorite playlist. From that moment to the end of the class, I blocked the world out.

It was peaceful.

That is until the thing I thought would never happen, happened.
