Boom: Chapter one

My name is Summer Ballard, Straight A student, head cheerleader, richest girl in school, and best dancer at "Dance till you drop" dance studio. My parents are Misty and Xander Ballard. They made this first smartphone with hologram calling.

"Welcome back everyone to Greeneville High school!" Mrs. Jensen said excitedly. "This year I have the pleasure of teaching honors math and science as well as being the supervisor of the math club."

"Excuse me Mrs. Jensen. I brought fresh cookies for the class could I pass them out?" asked Eva Hart aka the most annoying girl in school. Last year she almost beat me at the biggest dance competition in Arizona. I can't stand her! She pretends to be all nice and sweet around the teachers but to everyone else she is a complete monster!

"Why of course Eva. How kind of you!" Mrs.Jensen said warmly.

I sighed as Eva handed me a cookie. I saw her glare at me. I just hate her so much!

"Anyway class, since today is the first day you may come up and get your math books and talk among yourselves quietly for the rest of the period."

After what felt like forever Mrs.Jensen finally said "Okay class that is all I have for you guys today. You are dismissed. Have a good day!"

"And to the next class!" Alexis shouted as she ran down the hall. Alexis has been my best friend since kindergarten. She is completely obsessed with anything related to broadway.

"Why are you so excited to go to the next class?" I asked confused.

"Because our next class is english with Mr. Riley. And Mr. Riley directed Les Miserables last year!" We both burst out laughing. It's so typical for Alexis to bring up at least one musical in a sentence.

After what felt like twelve hours school was over. After school I had to go straight to dance practice. I take ballet, hip-hop, lyrical, tap, musical theatre, and jazz. Also I help with the 7-9 year old ballet and jazz class.

"Welcome back Summer!" Ms. Anderson said sweetly. Ms. Anderson is the owner of "Dance 'till you Drop" and is probably the nicest lady you'll ever meet.

"Good to be back!" I responded. First I had Jazz and hip-hop then tap, musical theatre, and ballet . As I was taking off my ballet shoes I noticed my mom in her car outside the studio.

I went outside and my mom yelled, "There's my favorite dancer! How was the first day of school?!"

"Ok" I said " As usual Eva got on my nerves and Alexis was hilarious." She giggled.

When we got home my dad was waiting at the front door with a huge smile on his face. "My girls! How was school, Summer?" he asked.

"It was ok. I really excited for English with Mr. Riley. And Alexis and I have three classes together!"

"Thats wonderful sweetheart!" He said as he gave me a huge hug. "What do we have for dinner tonight honey?"

"We're going to have apple cider chicken with brown rice and a chocolate cake with an espresso ganache." mom replied.

"Well that's quite the meal!" dad said excitedly.

While I was opening the door my dog, Duke, jumped up almost to my knees. Duke is a yorkie-chihuahua mix. I bent down so he could lick me.

"Hi duke! Who's a good boy?" I said as he licked my face. We continued to walk in the house and talked and laughed over dinner.

"Dinner was great mom! I'm going to go to bed I'm really tired after dancing all afternoon."

"Okay sweet dreams!" my parents said in unison. After I brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and took a shower, my head hit the pillow and I was out cold.

My eyes opened. It was morning already? I could smell bacon and eggs from the kitchen downstairs.

"Summer! Breakfast is ready! You're going to be late for school!" I heard my mom yell. I rushed down stairs and stuffed as much bacon and eggs into my mouth as I could.

"Don't choke sweetie. Eat slower!" my mom said loudly.

In the morning mom is pretty stressed and annoyed. Dad and I never know why but we just go with it. Better that than get yelled at for no apparent reason.

"Dad we have to go now I'm gonna be late!" I shouted.

"I'm coming! Grab the keys and get in the car I'll be there in five minutes." he responded.

When I got to school Alexis was totally freaking out. She was running in circles and it looked like she was praying.

"Summer! I completely forgot that the drama club auditions were today. I have nothing prepared! No song! No scene! No part! AHHHHHH!!!" she said frantically

"Chill out Alexis. Everything is going to be ok. Now what musical is this?" I said as I tried to calm her down.

"The play this year is Oliver Twist. Seriously Summer you should really know what your best friend is trying out for." Eva said.

"This is none of your business Eva." Alexis said sassily "This is a conversation between Summer and I. Go bother someone else."

"Ahhh I'm so scared." Eva said while laughing.

I kept trying to calm Alexis down. Eventually we decided she could borrow someone's song papers and work on it during lunch and study period. We both waited patiently until lunch. Alexis has a double study period on Tuesdays. I only have one study period then I have PE.

" Summer, thanks for helping me but do you think there's any chance you could watch my audition? I know you have dance but please for me?" Alexis begged.

"I don't know. We have a really important competition. I'll see if my dance teacher will let me go. But I don't know what she'll say."

"Oh-ok. I'm just really nervous. Nancy is a huge part. What if I don't get it. What if everyone laughs and makes fun of me?" She asked.

"You'll do great! I know it! You've auditioned so many times! You're a pro at this! Just pretend you're talking to me."

"But this is different." she paused

"How?" I asked unknowingly

"It just is." Alexis said.

"I'll walk with you down to the auditorium." I whispered " And besides you'll do amazing! I know Nancy is your favorite character but don't get so stressed out. Just know you will always be my best friend what ever happens."

After science class Alexis and I walked hand in hand to the auditorium. I noticed her hand getting abnormally sweaty. The cold sweat dripped down our hands. When we arrived at the auditorium we hugged and parted.

I ran to the bathroom and called Ms. Anderson.

"Hello! Dance 'till you drop studio. How can I help you?" I heard her voice say.

"Hi Ms.Anderson! It's Summer Ballad. I was wondering If I could maybe come like 45 minutes late to jazz?" I asked hopefully.

"Sure. Why? Is everything ok?" She sounded concerned.

"Yeah. My bestfriend is auditioning for a big part in our school play and she really wants me to be there."

"Not the best reason to miss ¾ of jazz class. But I guess its ok."

"I'm sorry. I usually would tell her no but this is really important to her and I want to be there for her. Thanks bye!" I hung up.

As I was leaving Eva strutted right through the door and stared at me with a sinister from plastered on her face.

"What are you doing here? I thought you were dancing with the loser studio today." She said sassily.

"I'm here to support my best friend. And for your information we beat you at nationals."

"Yeah right."

"Yeah for once you're right." I responded.

I tried to run passed her. But she stopped me.

"Where do you think you're going? I'm not done yet."
