Near the rift

The rift had appeared about a month ago.The rift, which opened suddenly , huge and extremely intimidating. It looked like a hole into hell , and it might have been. It took or added things on to people , creating monstrosities. People fused with objects, peoples skin peeled off or disappeared altogether, and many suffered disfiguration to their entire bodies.  Most technology stopped working and most plant life died, leaving the majority of the world looking like a desert. Most animals were also disfigured, unless they were underground. The most normal thing on the planet right now is worms. They are fine! Never been so happy to see a worm, but they're basically the only thing left normal. Out in the wastelands ,  Ryan , a half-skeleton, works to clean up the bodies left from people who died from the disfiguration caused by the rift.. The skin on the right side of his face is gone, so is his upper lip. His right calf is gone, all the way from the knee to the foot. Most of his ribs are showing and he has but duct tape on them to keep his internal organs safer.Ryan scavenges the streets and buildings for supplies, when not burying the dead, and sleeps in the abandoned buildings. He was near a steel plant at the time of the rift. Most of the workers inside died from metal shrapnel or hot steel tossed by the rift. The town was very sparsely populated , being a small town in Arkansas. Ryan rarely ran into anyone alive. The grass, which he could see out of the window of the building he usually  stayed in , seemed to be coming back. The forest had been decimated in the rift. The trees, even though it was early April, were completely bare. It seemed to be getting colder, too.It was likely only perception, because he had spent his entire life in warmed buildings. He hated the cold so much. Ryan had found a notebook, one of those compositions , in a building that was a dollar store before the rift. Ryan knew, he had lived in this city his entire life. Ryan had also found a notebook. The notebook was mostly unscathed , so he took it, and a few pencils. He kept it as a journal, usually taking notes on his work with the dead and his supplies, but sometime also writing thoughts. The ransackers had already visited his area. They had smashed many windows and stole a lamp from him. He had made another, he had always been very creative. Today is the day he finally has to go into his high school. He is 17 , but had skipped on the day of the rift. He really didn’t want to go in, knowing some of the dead he was going to know, but he needed to bury them, at least . Ryan had found a wheelbarrel , which came in handy with transporting the dead. Ryan doubted it would do much good for the dead on the second floor, he remembered his school’s stairs being incredible easy to slip down. He didn’t have to open the front doors, the glass in them were broken . He could see down a long way without entering the building, being the main hall was long and straight , with more glass doors on the other end. It had two offices, two bathrooms, the elevator, and the lunchroom on it. Several bodies were already seen. He had only moved about two bodies out of the school when he heard something strange. It sounded like a horse buggy , and it was coming very close . It stopped outside of the school. It was a wagon , with horses tied to a wooden frame and a tan cloth covering the back. The two horses looked very normal. Two men got out of the front.

“Do you think they’re dead?” the short of the two said. No features could be made out because they were both wearing black cloaks with hoods.

“No , but they won’t make any money like this. Throw them out.”

“ Okay boss.” the man began dragging bodies out of the back. Most of them seemed still, but a few moved, none of them fought back , though.Soon after , the wagon left. There were five bodies left  out there. Ryan , with his empty wheelbarrel  , went outside. Three of the bodies weren’t moving at all. One of the others was slowly trying to drag himself away. Ryan checked the three unmoving bodies. Two were cold and had no pulse ,  obviously dead. The third one was  very strange ,being it was still warm , with no pulse. The body didn’t seemed relaxed , like dead bodies are. One of the moving started coughing, really badly. He didn’t know what to do, at least two of them had a chance to live. He put the coughing one and the crawling one. The coughing one started to spit up little bits of blood. Ryan didn’t have time to decide whether the one without a pulse was alive or not. He put him in the wheelbarrel and started taking them home.on the way home , the one coughing spit up several razors. He had coughed enough blood to have it cover the bottom of the wheelbarrel. He eventual fainted and died. Ryan put hm out of the wheelbarrel. It had taken a lot longer than usual to get back home because of the weight. The. Building that Ryan lived in had stairs in the front , so he couldn’t push the wheelbarrel inside. He first tried carry the one awake in. The guy obviously didn't want help because he struggled and fought weakly. Ryan gave up and helped the other in. He was extremely light and… spiky? It was weird,  it was like the boy had something attached to him that kept poking him. Ryan laid him down right inside the building. The other guy had tipped the wheelbarrel over and was dragging himself away. Ryan let the other go , but did bring the wheelbarrel inside. The other was still completely still.
