Once upon a time, there was a nation under the threat of tyranny. The fate of all lives would be decided by this terror: the College Board. Every student was required to take an exam before graduation. Actually, seven in total. These exams would determine their careers, jobs, and future. No one knew how the game worked. The general rule was that the better grades you got, the brighter future the College Board assigned you. However, that theory had been disproven before. Students around the country cheated, lied, betrayed, sacrificed so much just for a chance for the College Board to be merciful upon them.
At Sekal Naeco High School, the pressure to do anything to secure a well-off future was just the same. Sophia walked into her AP Human Geo class, knowing full well that she wouldn't learn anything. Someone in her class had paid off the teacher, Mr. Harry Phelch, to only tutor them personally, and to let the rest of the students teach themselves. Though Mr. Phelch taught nothing, spending his time shopping on Wamazon, he prohibited almost all the students from studying or doing homework. The student who bribed him was making sure that they would succeed, while others wouldn't.
The lack of ability to study or do homework created a dealing network. As some of the students were unable to have the work out long enough to actually solve the problems and dreaded FRQs, there had become a dealing network of answers. The higher your scores were and less amount of sleep you got, the better quality images of the finished work you could get. Or, the more money you had, the more you could get.
Sophia never had a need for those answers and deals. Though they often tried to deal to her to see her score, she never accepted. Why would she? After all, she was the one who submitted the best quality pictures and answers. Her only rival dealer was a legend. They often competed with each other for who could upload the most accurate and quality pictures before the other. Sophia only knew his username of 'RussiantoJew3'. She had never seen him in person. Well, if she had, she did not know it was him. As far as she was aware, he didn't know her identity either. Nobody did. Anonymity was key on those deep intricacies of the web.
Sophia watched the rest of her classmates carefully as they did a nonexistent amount of work. She felt a moderate amount of anger grow as she realised how awful their society and norms were. A sudden clearing of the throat behind her started her out of her saltiness. She turned quickly to see her favourite teacher, Harry Phelch. She looked down sheepishly as he gave a hard look.
"Get back to checking your social media, kid."
She felt a swell of smugness and the need to irritate. "Kid? Does this mean you'll adopt me, Mr. Phelch?"
He rolled his eyes and walked away, apparently deciding he didn't want to deal with her today. Sophia decided she was going to play on the WilkieWay server for the rest of the block. When the bell rung, she hurried to her next class, AP Chem with Tathy Kurner, with her best friend Joehit Moshi.
Sophia walked in rushed silence with her best friend. She had three minutes to get to the other side of the building to prepare for her most vigorous class. She sighed in relief as she entered the lab two minutes before the bell would ring, Joehit right behind her. They parted their ways in silence, knowing that their teacher would come in soon to talk and that she did not like interruptions. It was an unspoken rule amongst her students. Instead of verbally speaking, they would sign under their desks, if they knew how.
Sophia sat next to her assigned partner, Allets'a Eschimo. She was pretty decent, a little "out there", sometimes, but a lot better than the other people in Sekal Naeco. She had no real care for College Board's game.
Allest'a nodded her greetings to Sophia as she sat down. She began signing almost immediately.
"Aren't you tired of hearing her talk about College Board all the time?"
Sophia nodded, her eyes only glancing at Allest'a's hands. "You have no idea. I hate how we have to do this."
Allest'a grinned, "Meet me after school at that always empty park. I've got someone for you to meet and a place to show you."
