a sadness runs through him

Jesse was sobbing. Loudly. It was the middle of the night and Jesse had just woken up from a nightmare about none other than the pig who haunted him every morning and every night, Reuben. He had always been a loud crier, but he cried the loudest when it was over Reuben. He was certain he wouldn't wake anybody, as the rest of the Order of the Stone were deep sleepers. He wished, though, that somebody would come and comfort him and protect him from his own thoughts and fears. He was trembling violently, and was on the verge of throwing up when he realized once again that Reuben was never coming back. He was gone forever. This only caused Jesse to sob harder. This was the deepest despair he had ever felt, and part of him felt like nothing was worth it anymore. What would life be without your best friend? What was the point. Jesse's wish for comfort was answered when Lukas burst into his room, looming extremely worried. When he saw the condition the other male was in, he approached and hugged him softly, pulling him close in an attempt to calm him. "Shh, I've got you. You're okay, Jesse. You're okay."

Jesse hugged Lukas tightly, burying his face against the blonde's chest. His grip was tight, but this seemed to help him quite a lot. His crying eased, no longer screaming, and his trembling softened. He felt so pathetic, feeling so weak and helpless, when adventurers were supposed to be strong and cool. He wanted to go back in time, save Reuben, even if it meant sacrificing himself. "He was my best friend," he choked out.

"I know, Jesse, I'm so sorry," Lukas said softly, feeling a little brave and deciding to run his fingers through Jesse's hair comfortingly. "I love you so much. You didn't deserve to lose a friend."

Things were quiet besides the sounds of Jesse's crying, and soon even that ceased. He began to just feel tired, but not wanting to be alone. The heartache was too strong, and he couldn't handle it by himself. "Please stay with me."

"Wasn't planning on leaving." Lukas wanted to take care of Jesse, help him overcome the depression Reuben's death left him. "I'm never leaving you."

Jesse sniffled, mustering out a "Thank you," before looking up at Lukas with tearful eyes and kissing him softly. Lukas kissed back gently.

The two of them stayed in bed together, Lukas holding Jesse close and protectively. Jesse was the first to fall asleep.

In moments like this, Lukas knew without a trace of doubt he would do anything for Jesse, anything to see him smile and light up his world again.
