Prologue
BANG BANG BANG . Sam jolted awake at the sound of banging at her door. She looked at her clock by her bedside. It was three 0'clock in the morning. Her heart raced as she went to her bed side and grabbed the gun from under neath her bed.
The bang game again, and then heard "Sammy, open up please it's me! Hurry!" Coming from the other side of the door. Sam ran to the door opening it for her long time friend. The sight of her worn and beaten friend, carrying her crying baby, was sickening.
"Help me." She said as she stumbled into the apartment." Sam quickly helped her friend to a couch and took the crying baby in her arms. Sam looked over the baby, holding back tears when she found a bruise on his arms. When she had changed him and he was no longer crying she went to her friend.
"What happened?" She asked? Knowing full well it was her husband. Her friend shook her head, sniffling,"He wanted to hold the baby, so he took him from me. Sam, he was hurting him he was holding him too tight. He's given him bruises before and I was afraid he would do it again.
He wouldn't stop crying, I tried to stop him, But he hit me. He threw my baby in the crib, Sammy! He told me he didn't need me to tell him how to hold his baby. He didn't need me to tell him how to be a father. He went to the room to get the gun. I waited till I heard him upstairs then I grabbed the baby and ran to the neighbors like a mad woman. They called the police. And they arrested him."
She was shaking now, her eyes angry with fire. Sam looked at her, her heart hurting for her friend. She shook her head and stood from where she sat. "We need to leave, now." "What?" Sam then bent down at eye level to speak to her friend.
" do you want out? Do you want to go somewhere he cant hurt you or your baby anymore? She asked? She thought for a Moment Then answered, I just want to raise my baby without fear." Sam nodded. I want that for you. But if you stay here he will come back. He can pay bale and he will come back."
" No, there's no such place Sam, he will find me." She said exasperated, placing her head in her hands. Then, looking up she said, "but he won't find you." Sam stood up suddenly, not sure where this was going. " What..."
"Sam take Anthony with you, he'll be safe with you. Please, I just... I can't bare to see that man hurt him any more. Promise me that you will, Please?!" Tears fell as she looked at her sleeping baby. "He's all that I am Sammy." Sam looked at her friend. Desperate and lost.
Finally she sighed and went to her friends side. "Alright. I'll take him somewhere safe, I promise. I will take care of him as if he were my own. But you need to get out too." A nod of the head was all she recieved. A few hours later they stood at the air port. Sam now carried Anthony's bags. Anthony was in his mother's arms fast asleep. Her friends two small bags were on the floor at her feet. Sam had pursued her to go to her mother's. And she was to take Anthony to a safe location. Far from here. Sam turned to her friend. "It's not to late to change your mind, you can still come with us." "No, I can't. He'll be looking for me. He won't expect me to seperate from Anthony. If I do this, then Anthony will be safe. Sam nodded. "Alright, then take this," Sam handed her a small bag in it contained money, blonde hair dye, sun glasses, an old cell phone, and a phone number. Her friend looked at her, her eyes deep and concerning. "Don't talk to anyone until you get to your mother's. Use the phone as little as possible. Use the number in here if you need to get a hold of me. And use only cash. No credit cards, and no checks. Alright?" She nodded. "What about the hair dye?" She asked solemnly. She had beautiful red brunet curls. She had never dyed it before. "Change your hair before you get to your mother's. He's never been there before. So he won't know where to look." Her friend nodded. And as they both heard the flight announcement, they knew it was time say Their good byes. She looked at Anthony's sleeping face, and kissed his forehead, his cheek, his nose, then his eyes, and fingers, then his cheeks again.
"I love you," she said, as tears fell from her eyes. "Never forget my love, you are mine." A tear fell from Sam's eye as her friend handed her, her baby boy. She knew how much she meant to him. She might as well have given her, her very breath. For as long as Sam could remember, her friend had wished for a family. A child of her own. She had been told she couldn't have children. She had tried for years. when she had become pregnant with Anthony, she had been convinced it was a miracle from god. And now Sam was holding this tiny little miracle. And She was now responsible for him. She cradle him in her arms and looked at her friend. "I swear to you, I won't let anything happen to him." Her friend nodded not able to say anything. She kissed her baby one more time and hugged her friend goodbye. Grabbing her bags, she turned away. Fighting the urge to look back.
Having rented a car at the airport when they landed Sam now drove through the night, exhausted. Not daring to stop. All the terror and fear and the adrenaline being the only things keeping her awake.
She Listened intently to the soft rhythmic breathing of the year old baby in the back seat. "You will be safe," she whispered, "whatever it takes, you will be safe." As she focused on the lights and signs and sights around her as she drove through the busy night. Making her way into the city. "We'll disappear here,"She thought. He'll never know. Her mind drifted to her family. The shame she felt. She had left with out goodbyes, without explanation as to why or Where she had left too. What would they think of her and her running? She wanted to tell them goodbye. But she couldn't. She didn't want to run but she had to. She would do anything to keep the baby safe. And to do that they had to disappear. Without any contact with her family that could be traced back to her. I guess its just you and me baby boy, we're on our own. She said solemnly. Hearing her own words and no reply, none except the sound of the baby's snoring.
She sighed. What would they do? They couldn't drive forever. Where would they go? Sam thought hard as she drove. We could go to the country, she thought, where we could lay low. With little people around to bother us. No, the city would be better. I would be surrounded by people, witnesses. If he did find us, there would be Countless witnesses. We would just be another face amongst the crowd. They wouldnt't notice if were there. We'll blend in. She pondered. "Yes, that is what we'll do. We'll live in the city." She said to herself. She sighed as she thought of living in the city. She had lived in a small town all her life. But nothing seemed to be a secret for very long in a small town.
Her heart felt sad and heavy as she remembered her home and her family, she had left behind. The tiny little apartment she had moved into with the help of her twin brothers. Her breath quickened as she realized that her life as she knew it was over. All that she worked for was over. The people she loved and knew could never know where she was. That's all behind us now, she thought. I can no longer be Samantha Reese Ferris. Anew identify, Anew life. No more sam, no more Anthony. From here on out, they are gone. Will ever be Sam again, she thought. Her eyes intense looking straight ahead. Again she Listened to Anthony's breathing. "Whatever I have to do, I will. As long as your safe."
