Darkness. It surrounds me. I'm numb. Completely numb.

People have been walking up to me and telling me how sorry they are and that it will get better with time, but in all honesty, how fucking dare they. How dare they have the guts to look me in my eyes at my own parents funeral and tell me that everything will be okay. They can't even begin to know what it feels like to be 20 years old and burying your parents.

RINNNGGG, RIINNNGGG, RIINNNGGGG
"OH MY GOD!!! WHAT NOW?" I yelled at my phone. Finals were this week and I had been trying to study for the past two hours, but every time I got situated and started making progress, I got interrupted.
"Hello," I growled into my phone.
"Yes, Is this Brittany Robinson?" a voice said.
"This is she."
"Ma'am, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but your parents were involved in a fatal car crash."
Darkness overcame me and my i-Phone shattered all over the floor.

"Brittany," a familiar voice laced with sadness said.
I turned around and flung my arms around his neck. Tears streaming down my face and staining my uncles shirt.
"Shhhh, honey. Shhhhh," my uncle James said as he tried his best to comfort me.
We stood frozen in the hug for what felt like an eternity. I finally pulled away as I noticed that people were beginning to leave.
I received so many hugs from people as they were exiting the church that I honestly think I could go the rest of my life without being hugged ever again. Once the final guest left, It was just me and the few immediate family that I have left. We began to help clean up, but were instantly shooed out by the employees of the funeral home.
"So, how long are you staying in Texas, Uncle James?" I managed to speak for the first time today.
"Uhh, we leave Friday morning," he said as his wife Julia offered me a small smile.
Friday morning. That's in two days. How am I gonna get by after they leave?
"O-Ohhh," I stuttered.
"Honey, we really wanted to stay longer," Aunt Julia said apologetically, "But unfortunately, James couldn't take off work any longer."
"It's okay. I'll be fine; I always am," I smiled weakly.
"Nonsense, you're coming to live with us in L.A.," said Uncle James. "That is if you would like to..."

"Well, I think that's it," I say aloud to myself. I walk out of my childhood bedroom and through the now empty house that I had lived in for twenty years. I turned and walked through the bare entryway to the room that had belonged to my parents. I turned the nob slowly and half expected to she mom sitting on her bed watching something on her i-Pad as I had seen so many times before, but I didn't. I walked in the room and sat in the middle of the empty space. Tears started threatening my eyes and I closed them as an attempt to block them. It didn't work. Sobs were escaping my mouth as I felt my phone vibrate. I glanced at my phone and it was a text from aunt Julia asking if I had made it to the airport. I glanced at the time. 2:45. "Shit," I cursed under my breath. My flight was at 4 and it takes an hour to get to the airport as long as there's no traffic at all, and there always is. I replied with a quick "on my way" and grabbed keys. With a quick glance around the living room, I walked out the front door and locked it. I ran to my neighbors house and gave them my spare key.
"Thanks again for watching the house for me while I'm away," I smiled at my neighbor of 19 years.
"No problem dear. Always happy to," Rhonda smiled.
She gave me a quick hug and we said our goodbyes. I ran back to my house and hopped into the Uber. He backed out of my driveway and started heading towards the airport.

"Flight 247 to Los Angelos, California is now boarding," was the first thing I heard as I made my way into the airport. I sprinted towards the gate as fast as I could. I barely made it. I climbed aboard the plane and got settled in my seat. The flight attendant made the normal announcement about seat belts and no electronics and then we were off. I looked out the window as we flew high above Texas. Man I'm gonna miss it here.
"Miss," I heard as someone lightly shook my shoulder. I slowly opened my eyes and saw that we were back on ground.
"We're here, ma'am," the flight attendant smiled.
"Thank you for waking me," I replied.
She nodded and walked away. I must have fallen asleep early in the flight because last I remember I was thinking about how much I was going to miss Texas as we were flying over the state. I grabbed my things and exited the plan. My eyes were blinded by the California sun. I grabbed my sunglasses out of my purse and slipped them on making my way towards the airport entrance.
I walked through the sliding doors and sat my sunglasses on the top of my head. My brown hair was a mess but who cares. It's an airport. I walked in the direction of the luggage belt. I grabbed my suitcase and checked my phone. I had a text from uncle James saying he was here waiting out front in a black SUV. I stopped and grabbed a white chocolate mocha before making my way towards the exit. As soon as I stepped out of the doors I was met with the warm rays of the sun. I slipped my sunglasses back on my face and looked around for my uncle.
I spotted him as he stepped out of his car and made his way towards me. He hugged me and grabbed my bags, then we were off.
The radio was playing faintly as we rode in silence. I leaned my head against the window, taking in the sights of California. There are so many palm trees.
"Beautiful isn't it?" My uncle finally broke the silence.
"Yeah. It's a lot different from Texas, that's for sure, I replied.
He chuckled as we made our way through the traffic. We pulled up to his house about ten minutes later. My jaw dropped. I knew he had been doing well for himself out here, but I didn't know he was doing this well!
"Holy shit," I blurted without thinking. My face turned beat red when I realized what I had said. James started laughing.
"Brittany, you are 20 years old. I know you have probably said a lot worse. It's okay," he said still laughing.
I couldn't help but laugh along. We got out of the car and walked up the sidewalk into the gorgeous home. Here goes nothing, I thought to myself as he showed me my new room.
"Get settled and I'll let you know when dinner is ready," my uncle smiled and shut my door.
I started to unpack, but stopped halfway through. I sat on the comfortable bed they had set up for me and sighed. My mind was going 90 to nothing as I thought about what could possibly lay ahead for my in Cali. I wish mom or dad were around so they could steer me in the right direction, but they can't. I'll have to rely on the impact they had on me to help guide me. I miss them more and more everyday.
