I had known her before
what seems like decades ago,
a beautiful smile she wore
her eyes shining brightly so.
She dreamt in the day
she thought in the night.
She had flown with the gale,
she had laughed with delight.
Who I know now
is a shell without hope.
I just keep wondering how
it is her who has to cope.
She prays in the day,
she cries in the night.
All she wants is to stay-
eyes wide open in fright.
For what if she closes them once
and never opens them again?
For what if it was you,
or someone you loved dearly too?
A victim, a sufferer of breast cancer
could be a fighter, a survivor, with the right answer.
Which is to be aware
and make an effort to care.
To spread a word to the world,
and a prayer to the lord.
For the gold of our mines,
the women of our times.

Usually, the first question which is shot towards me after people read this is "Who were you thinking of when you wrote this? Was someone in your family a sufferer?" My reply is usually "Alhamdulillah, none." What I am not able to tell them is that- It does not matter if it is my family or not. It does not matter If I knew her.
Think of that woman who did suffer. Who spent days crying, praying but to no avail. That woman left a scar on the hearts of all those who loved her. That women had her world ripped apart piece by piece, And yet all we think of is to just check with the immediate family and leave it at that. Do the other women not have a family? Do they not have kids, parents, friends and their 'other half's' who are left crying, lamenting their faith?
Believe me when I say this- The world is a small place, and saving it can only be done together. Spread awareness- for every woman out there to realize how valuable her life is, for her to protect it and save herself.
Be your own knight in shining armour <3
