When Todd asked me to go star gazing with him, I thought nothing of it. He'd been my friend since as long as I could remember, and we'd always do things like that. So, there I sat on my bed, waiting for any sign of him.
The window was open so I could smell the warm summer breeze and hear the sounds of the night. Thinking back, I should have heard him coming.
"Hah! Got ya!"
I jumped back, grabbing at my chest as I turn to see him standing behind me.
"Copper, I've told you a million times not to sneak up on me, yet you still do," I crossed my arms and glared at him.
"I thought you'd hear me, you did have the window open," he said as he pointed to it, giving me a goofy grin. "But anyways, you ready to go?" He held up a rolled up blanket.
"Sure, lemme grab my jacket."
I walked over to the door and grabbed my red jacket, pulling out on and turning back to face him.
"Now are you ready?" He chuckled at me, flicking the fox ears at the top of my hood.
"Yeah, let's go."
I climbed out the window and out into the cool night air, taking a deep breath and smiling.
Copper never acted like anything more than a friend, but I couldn't help the feeling the something was different. Little did I know, my feelings for him were about to change.
As we walked towards the field, I noticed that Copper was trailing behind me. I stopped and waited for him to catch up.
"You alright, bud?" I asked as I noticed him looking at the ground, almost like he was daydreaming.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Sorry just thinking."
He gave me a small, almost shy, smile and walked up to me as I continued to walk. The trees opened up to a wide field and crystal clear sky. I could see the stars for miles, my breath caught in my chest as I stared up, awestruck.
"Copper, it's beautiful out here"
I glanced back as I saw him unroll the blanket, getting down and stretching out on it.
"You think that's beautiful," he said, motioning me over "come look at this."
I walked over slowly, feeling butterflies in my stomach, as I slowly lay by him. One glance up at the sky and my mouth dropped open.
"Oh my God... It's gorgeous..."
As I look up, I suddenly feel his hand tentatively take mine. I glance over, shocked, but don't pull away.
"It's not the only thing that's gorgeous." He said as he looked into my eyes.
I couldn't believe it, it was actually happening. I didn't know what to say so I stuttered like an idiot.
"Shh don't worry," he gave me a small smile. "I don't know what to say either."
I closed my eyes and without thinking, gave him a small kiss on the cheek. I scooted closer to him and rested my head against his chest, listening to his rapid heart beat.
"I think I have a pretty good idea." I took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. "I love you..."
It didn't take long for him to respond, he placed his hand lightly on my back before speaking.
"Todd, I love you too. I always have."
He pulled me up and started to kiss me. I melted into his embrace and smiled into his lips. I could tell that this was going to be the best summer of my life.
