The air was cold, no not cold, freezing the middle of October was thought to be the month of chilly air not freezing. I threw on my old grad hoodie and headed for the trails the lead to the ocean view on the beach. I was usually the only one that would run these trails but it felt like today was different, like someone was following me.
I sped up my pace because I felt like a good day to escape the real world of college and being away from my family and my hometown was starting to get to me. With my headphones in, I started to run to the beat of the song and closed my eyes for a moment when I hit something, or someone.
Opening my eyes, we both sat on the cold ground, frosted from the night before. The man stood up and brushed himself off and without asking if I was okay. What a jerk.
"You should watch where you are going." I couldn't believe the words he was saying.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me Princess. Move or be moved." he said and jogged off.
I couldn't believe that guy. I was actually so mad at him and I felt like running after him just to kill him. Instead I took the high road and I knew I'd see him again.
I stood up, brushed myself off and started to pull the twigs out of my long, curly blond hair that was pulled into a ponytail. The rest of the run was great until I got back to my house and saw that mom and dad, also known as Ami and Jon, were fighting again.
They had been going at it since dad had told mom a couple days ago about his affair. He was a businessman and owned many companies. He had all the right moves to charm people into investing money into his companies, and those moves had also worked on all his assistants. The last assistant, Robyn I think her name was, kept with him and dad had been talking about her a lot lately. Mom and dad agreed to invite her over for dinner because she worked so hard and was a single parent. That was obviously before mom knew about the affair and couldn't cancel on her now, she wasn't that kind of person.
I walked through the sliding back door that entered right into the kitchen. The house itself was like a castle on the hill and I have enjoyed living here but it was out of my lifestyle, it was to much for me. I would rather live in my two bedroom apartment across town. Dad had insisted on something bigger but I rather have the small place I share with my best friend Kelly.
Kelly and I do everything together. Our friendship wasn't about money or what we owned, it was about each other. We would always do our sports together, like volleyball, running, and even swimming in my indoor pool at moms house. And in the winter, we would jump, spin and dance on the bay with our skates as loud music would blast out of the speaker. Mom and dad would even skate with us some days, since they were pairs for more than 20 years.
Now, they stand in the kitchen screaming and they can barely look at each other. I hesitate before speaking cause I knew I would get caught in the middle of it so I just grabbed some leftovers from the fridge and headed to my old room up the spiral staircase. Walking down this hallway felt new to me, like I just moved into a new house with a completely different family. We have always been a loving, caring family that would avoid all drama. But now, we have the fighting and the mistress over for dinner.
Dinner. I completely forgot . I took my phone and checked the time. 2:30. Dinner is at 4. I rushed to pick out my nicest outfit, which had to be my sky blue summer dress. It was the perfect fitting and showed all my curves. I layed my dress on the bed along with my undergarments, even though it was the middle of October. I threw a pair of brown sandals with gems on them on the bed with my dress.
I jumped in the shower and played my shower music, singing ever word to every song as I washed my hair. I climbed out and wrap myself in a towel.
I walked back to my room from my built in bathroom and find my hairdryer as my favorite song comes blaring through my phone speaker.
I heard that you settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now-ow-oww
I heard that your dreams came true
She gave you things I couldn't give to you
Mom had taught me that song on piano and I instantly fell in love with the lyrics the same way mom had. She'd teach me all her favorite Adele songs for talent shows cause she knew I could sing them with a strong voice. Learning these songs when I was younger inspired my to teach.
It was close to 4pm and I hurried downstairs as the doorbell had gone off.
"Honey, could you place the food on the table?", mom said putting on a fake smile, but the hurt was still in her eyes.
"Of course", I replied.
Mom opened the door and greeted two beautiful people.
"Welcome", she said politely and stepping out of the way to let them in.
"Princess?", the man said directly to me. I turned around to the sound of his voice. The same ignorant voice from the trail.
