"Prisha!!"
I don't flinch as the crackling voice of my instructor roars my name. My bare feet don't slow and instead whips rapidly at the slick floor. Slowly my saree starts to unravel. Taking no time to stop, I rip the large peice of cloth off my body and gather it in a bundle. Underneath I've prepared a loose pair of silk pants. Again a roar echos my name and now I run even faster with the saree off.
Swiftly I take a sharp turn and immediately pause. Two guards block my path but they look stiff as they look at me. "We apologize Your Royal Highness, but we've been ordered to escort you back." They take a step forward. I don't move. They take another step forward.
Taking my bundle, I thrust out the large fabric into their faces. It won't hold them for long, but just enough for me to get past. They struggle to find the exit from the cloth that tints their vision pink. When I swoop past them I make sure to avoid their sharp pointy spears. "Sorry!" I hollar back. Then I think. I don't have to think hard. "Not really!"
When ten seconds past, I still don't hear their loud boots squeaking against the polish. I know they're being scolded by my instructor now.
I take the specific twists and turns that are required in order for me to reach my destination. When I see the door, I look to my left, right, and behind me. No-one. The door is so camaflouged that if you didn't know it was there, you would just think that it was just another wall. I push the door in and enter. I'm quick to push it back into place.
There's only one path, and that's up the spiraling stairs. Dust flutters around like wandering bugs. Cobwebs litter the ceilings and corners. The stair railings lean outwards as if there's something to be peeking at below them.
I walk up the hard and narrow steps slowly and let my fingers tickle the rails. It's a pretty long walk but it's worth it, so I take my time. Plus, I know that I'm the only one who knows this place exists.
Finally when I reach the end of the stairs, there reveals three large windows separated by small gaps from the wall. The area is rather large. The sunlight stabs the cactuses that surround the circular area. I grow them up here, ever since I found this place. They line the walls but leave the middle area open. I take a seat on the cold floor.
Sometimes I hate it up here. It makes me think of everything. It makes the voices so loud.
But most of the time the world becomes so quiet that my world becomes so dangerously loud. Loud enough that I fear the whole world can hear.
I sigh and lay down to face the ceiling. I close my eyes.
I told them I didn't need anyone. I told them I was only 16.
I didn't tell them I wasn't ready. I didn't tell them I was scared.
"We're planning it as soon as possible."
"Mother-!" I exclaim. She stands in front of me. We're in my room. Father comes to me and holds my hand. He just came back from overseas. I notice this because he's dressed in western clothes.
"We can't delay much longer, dear. We've held it off as much as we could. Please understand," he says in a hushed tone.
I grit my teeth. I bite my tongue. I do anything to keep myself from screaming. Why me?
The world rushes back to choke me as I open my eyes. I had ran away from my instructor as we were doing a dress fitting for the forced marriage ball. Of course I'm not going to ditch her forever, just wanted to let her know I wasn't happy. A sinister grin lines my teeth up. Also, it was pretty fun.
I jump to my feet and swipe off any dust on my bottom. Taking one last look at my cactus plants, I huff a big sigh and trot down the stairs.
I leave my little place and return the way I came. "Princess Prisha!" Mrs. Pin calls. Her posture is poised as always.
"Why there you are!" I scoff. She stares me down.
"Shall we continue our fitting?" She asks in a calm tone mixed with spice. I nod and a small smile grows as I know she won't assign me any homework or nag me with lectures with everything going on.
Me and her have history. I love to mess with her. Mainly because everything she does is perfect. Her shoes, her saree, not a ripple out of place. But I've learned not to underestimate her. She's shown me her sneaky side.
My smile falters as we enter my room. The lady dressers are ready and look at me as I walk in. I know my hair is a mess. I sigh and walk in. Let's get this over with.
Mother and Father believed that dressing in westerners clothes would be easier for everyone and look as if we fit in. But it's too bad that Aala won't be able to make it, my elder brother. He now rules the New United States with aunt Nayla and her three year old son, Araav. She just had triplets and won't be able to travel for awhile.
I yelp as a needle pricks my hip. The lady does it again and I sigh as my eyes look at the door but they meet Mrs. Pins instead. She looks straight at me as though she knows my thoughts, which I don't doubt. She cocks her head asking, what are you staring at?
I wink saying, oh nothing my favorite instructor. She shakes her and starts to hook up the projector. She begins to explain to me of the different princes that will be attending. She gives me every detail to them but I zone out and examine their faces. Some are quite handsome while others were not quite as blessed in that category. Germany, Ireland, Nigeria, Brazil, Canada. So many I can hardly remember. When she switches the screen however, I pause. Is that...?
