First Day

My head hurt from the lack of sleep. I shifted my backpack on my shoulder. The wind was strong against my face as if trying to stop me from going further. The sky was gray. Fitting. I didn't want to face mom this morning, so I left on my own. Her mood swings were worse than ever lately. And after last night's confrontation, I didn't feel like apologizing anytime soon. The first day of school and my senior year didn't start for another hour and a half. But if I got to class early I could avoid everyone, and their questions, for as long as possible. Hey, Jade! How was your summer? What did you do over the summer? How come you stopped texting me back? What's wrong? You look sad. Are you okay? "No. I'm not okay." My voice was a hushed whisper in the morning silence. My lips trembling. I could imagine it. Some would gather around me, while others would listen from afar. I wish it was different. I wish everyone could just overlook me as if I was invisible.

Stop! You're making things worse than they are. Just because people screwed you over, doesn't mean life is over. Just get through this year and you can escape to university. All you need is to plaster on a fake smile, and everything will be fine.

The grounds were relatively empty. Changing my mind, I walked past the portables. Leaving the school behind. I walked to the edge of the school grounds. Dropping my backpack beside me, I sat down. Leaning against the tree, I watched the sky with teary eyes, until unknowingly, they closed.

----------------

Poke. "Hm." I stirred. Poke. I opened my eyes, annoyed.

"What?" I said irritated. Bright brown eyes stared at me. The guy, who I assumed had poked me, retreated his hand back, surprised.

He continued to stare at me. I glared at him, growing more irritated.

"What?" I repeated.

He blinked, frowning. "Nevermind," He mumbled. He got up walking away.

I looked around. It was a lot brighter. The sky was a little clearer. Some of the storm clouds had passed...

Wait! What time is it???

"Oh crap!" I scrambled trying to find my phone. It was almost nine. School had already started. I grabbed my bag running. I ran past the guy who had just woken me. I could've sworn I heard him chuckle, but I didn't look back.

----------

Don't be afraid. For goodness sake, she can't kill me.

I lifted my hand to knock, but then lowered it. What if I just skip? It's better than walking in right now...

A hand reached past me, knocking three times. Nice and loud.

I whirled around. It was the same guy who I had just "met" outside.

Too embarrassed to face him, I turn to face the door again. Mrs. Bey opened the door frowning.

"Late on the first day, Jade?" I stared at my feet. "Sorry, Mrs. Bey." I glanced at her, she gave me the smallest of smiles. I sighed in relief. She wasn't mad. I smiled back, surprised at how easily I was able to do so.

"And who are you?" She stared at the boy, face serious again.

"Um, Aaron... Mrs. Bey."

"Right, the other transfer I assume. Welcome, but I expect you will arrive on time from now on?" She gave him a pointed look.

I guess Aaron must have nodded because Mrs. Bey stepped aside letting us in.

The sight of everyone watching us was overwhelming. I couldn't bring myself to focus on the faces. My eyes skimmed the desks. The desks were divided into three sections. Each section with two to three rows and four desks in each row. There were only two empty desks left. Both in the front row. I groaned inwardly. I didn't want to sit in the front. A girl named Brianna and an unfamiliar guy occupied the other two seats in the row. My attention directed to the guy sitting next to Brianna, working on his laptop. He looked up only now as if he hadn't realized what was happening. He was new, too. He was... My eyes widened. He was the last person I wanted to see.
