Chapter 1
"Alissa, are you sure you're doing okay?" Kelly asked me.
I rolled my eyes. "Kelly, please stop asking me that. I've been doing fine in my own for the past ten years."
She put her hands up. "Sorry for being concerned about my best friend."
I sighed and took another bite of my lunch.
Kelly and I had known each other for our entire lives. Our families had both lived here for generations, and now we were taking care of our parents properties.
"So, how is the farm-" Kelly began but was cut of by a loud holler from the street.
A loud group of men poured in through the doors of Kelly's restaurant, pushing and shoving one another playfully. The last one to enter wore no shirt, shorts with a orange pack attached to it, a belt, and a hat with two figures on it. He walked straight up to the bar and placed some bills on the counter.
"I'd like food for all of my men, and your best rum." He said.
"Of course. If you'll just wait a moment for me to prepare it." Kelly said setting down the class she was cleaning and went into the back room.
The man sat two seats down from me and waited patiently while his friends continued their rough housing.
Kelly came back out quickly carrying plates and mugs full of rum.
"Would you like some assistance?" The man asked.
Kelly smiled, but shook her head. "That's very kind but I'll be fine, thank you."
She began passing around plates while I listened in to some of the conversations the men were having.
"...can't believe how much we got from that ship! They were loaded!" I bit my lip and set my fork down. Picking up my plate, I walked into Kelly's kitchen to look at her wanted posters.
I set my plate in the sink and began sorting through the pile.
"What are you doing?" I looked up to see Kelly standing in the doorway.
"Those men were talking about a ship they robbed. They're pirates, Kelly. I just want to make sure they're not one of the really dangerous ones."
Kelly shook her head as I talked and grabbed my plate. "You know I don't care who comes into my restaurant. As long as they pay I have no problem with it."
"I know you don't, but-" I stopped talking and sorting through the papers. "Kelly." I said, and showed her the poster.
"Alissa, don't. I know what you're about to do, but you can't." She said, using my full name.
I ignored her and stormed out to the man sitting at the bar. "Get out." I hissed.
The pirate looked at me, confused at first. But then he saw the poster in my hands and his expression softened. "I'm sorry miss, but I have a right to eat here."
I crossed my arms. "I don't believe I stuttered. Get. Out." The pirates around us had fallen silent waiting for their captain to respond.
"I don't know what you think we're here to do, but we just want some good food." He said. It was annoying how calm he was handling this.
"And what will you do if my friend runs out of the food you like?" I asked. "I know your kind, Fire Fist Ace. You pirates are always the same. Act nice to get what you want, but the second you have what you need, you show your true colors. So quit acting and get out."
The restaurant was silent. Ace slowly stood up and took his pistol out of his pocket. I went rigid, but I didn't let him see. He placed the gun on the counter and stepped away.
"I'm not armed, okay? I can't do anything about my devil fruit power, but I swear I won't try anything." He said gently.
Kelly came around the bar and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Liz, it's okay. He's being honest."
I jerked away from her. "It's not okay." I said. "If you won't leave, then I will." I threw the flyer on the ground and stormed out of the restaurant.
