I stared up at the sky, waiting for my phone to ring any minute. I was waiting for that one call.
I thought about the stars. What if each human being represented one star in our galaxy? Can stars fall in love? When we die, does our star die too? That must mean the stars I'm seeing right now are all from people who passed away already, because even when a star is dead, the light still travels..
A loud buzzing entered my ear. A smile formed across my face as I eagerly picked up my phone to see if it was the call I was expecting. Incoming call from..
My mom. Oh, great.
I pick up the phone, no longer excited.
"Troye?" She says with a hint of panic in her voice. "Where are you? I've been worried about you."
I roll my eyes and sigh.
"I was just on the hill again, mom. No big deal." I check the time. 12am.
"Troye, it is a big deal. I thought I told you not to go there? It's dangerous." She sighs. "Just be home soon."
"Okay, mom." I say and hang up. Why does she treat me like this? I'm not a kid anymore. What's so dangerous about it?
—
I'm woken up by a loud banging, seemingly coming from downstairs. I sit up and look around.
I open my drawer and grab a flashlight, then tiptoe downstairs.
"H-hello..?" I whisper.
"Troye." I hear being whispered back. I jump back, startled. I can't make out who's voice it is.
"Who are you?" I ask, my voice shaky and hoarse.
"Doesn't matter. Come to the hill.."
I know I really shouldn't be awake this late or going anywhere, but I feel a strong urge to go back to it. I nod slowly and quietly open the door. I carefully tiptoe out and shut it, then sprint to the hill.
I beam with surprise when I see who's there. I run over to him and lock both arms around his neck. He's startled at first, but then smiles when he sees it's me.
"Troye!" He says happily.
"Hi Connor." I say. I sit down next to him and put my hand on his.
"Why didn't you call me earlier?" I ask, frowning. He frowns.
"Sorry, Troye. I was really busy. It was late anyway and I didn't want to be heard." He sighs. His frown turns to a smile as he whispers, "But the only thing that matters is that we're here now."
I smile and gently kiss him on the cheek. I look up at the stars again.
"Con?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think every human is a star?"
"What do you mean?" His expression turns to confusion.
"I mean–" I pause and try to think. "What if every star in the sky represents every human life?"
"Could be." I look at him, and his eyes are fixed on me. I smile and giggle.
"You know, Connor, you're really cute when you look at me like that."
"You know, Troye, you're really cute all the time." He moves in closer to me and wraps his arms around my neck.
"Am I?" I ask and giggle, and then I lean in and kiss him.
"Troye?"
"Yes Connor?"
"You know.. I love you." His face goes bright red.
