-2years later-

“Bristen, baby!”

“Bristen!”

“Come over here baby girl! We’ll show you a good time!”

I hear the cat calls and sniggering coming from across the parking lot. And just like every other day, I walk away without a word.  They don’t know me, not at all. If they had any idea how fast I could have their ass handed to them, maybe they’d leave me alone… but I couldn’t do that. I’ve worked hard for my reputation. I’m known as the airheaded slut with no life outside of the typical skank agenda.

What they don’t know is that my GPA is higher than all of theirs combined, and I haven’t had sex for over 2years. I’m the broken girl who can’t be fixed. I live my own life, because as long as I’m alone in this hell hole I won’t be dragging anybody else along with me. Nobody deserves this.

Nobody, except me.

As I walk into school I see our vice principal standing by my locker, with a group of my ‘friends’. I guess they could be considered friends, because they are who I spend all my time at school with. But, they don’t even know who I really am. All they see in me is popularity, boys, money, boys, and attention... from boys.

Walking over to them I put on my nonchalant look that I’ve mastered over the past couple of years.

“Hey Mr. Kapps!” I smirk as his face twists into a grimace.

“Bristen, I have informed you time and time again that my name is Mr. Kaperielu. It is—“

“Bless you.” I interrupt his little speech before it’s too late. I swear I’ve heard it a thousand times, it never changes.

“Excuse me?”

“I said Bless you.” He shakes his head a couple times in confusion, and then starts up his speech again.

“Anyways, my name is Mr. Kaperielu—“

“Bendiga.”

He looks at me with a mix between a murderous and an extremely confused expression, and I can’t help but laugh. My friends that were already standing there are laughing too, even though they probably don’t know what I’m saying either. Idiots.

Finally, he seems to have composed himself a little bit “Bendiga to you too. Now, I’ll let you off this time but remember, my name is—“

“Mr. Kapps.” He sends me a glare but lets it go.

“Hm. Well, I came to talk to you about your whereabouts over the weekend.” Shit. “These young people here were caught late last Friday night at a party selling harmful substances.”

Marley decides to speak up, looking extremely annoyed with the situation. “Drugs. They’re called drugs. We’re not five Mr. Krappy.”

Mr. K groans but doesn’t turn to discipline her. “Anyways. Were you or were you not involved in these illegal dealings?”

As I’m about to tell him to piss off I notice Marley sending looking at me and nodding her head, trying to get me to say yes.  Knowing I can’t say no without him asking what I really was doing, I go with it.

“Yes.”

“Now don’t try to lie to me to get out of trouble because I’ll – wait, did you just say yes?”

“Yep.”

“Oh. Well that was easy. I guess I’m going to have to ask you to come with us then.”

I stepped aside and slowly walked behind him.

Josie grabbed my arm and looked at me giggling, “What does Bendishy mean?”

Why do I hang out with these people?

“It’s bendiga, Josie. And it means Bless you in Spanish.”

She started laughing almost uncontrollably while pointing at me and nodding in approval.

These are the times when I have to remind myself how important these people are to me; important in hiding the broken vulnerable girl inside me.

By the time we make it into the principals’ office half our group has scattered, leaving me Marley Josie and Adam. Krapps doesn’t notice though.

I’m surprised these peoples stupidity hasn’t killed them yet.

Longest. Day. Of. My. Life.

I didn’t have to go to any of my classes because we were being questioned almost the entire school day. I just played along and went with whatever stories Marley was throwing out there.

He let us off easy because it was a first offence and because they ‘hadn’t actually smoked any of it’. Bull shit. I’ve just given up on fighting it, I have my own life to keep up and being able to keep it MY life not everybody else’s, I have to keep these bimbos here as a cover up.

He let us go at about 3:30 and I couldn’t have been more eager to get out of there.

As soon as I got home I all but killed myself trying to run up the stairs a little too fast. Within 5min I had changed out of my way too skinny jeans, and pushup bra. I’m now speeding down the road in my sweats and t-shirt, knowing I can’t be late again without getting yelled at by coach.

This is my real life; it’s the only thing I participate in that can keep my mind off of reality. I play on the boys’ baseball team on the Indian reserve just south of town. I’m the only girl allowed on, and it’s the best thing I’ve got.

I jumped out of my truck while checking my phone for the time. Two minutes late! Really!? Coach is going to kill me!

I ran the whole way across the ball park, and as I got closer I still couldn’t see anybody.

Did we not have practice today? No, I specifically remember him saying we had it today! Our big game is next week, we can’t skip practice! I guess everybody else is just late. That must be it.

I dropped all my stuff in the dugout and started pulling out my mitt, deciding to start warming up while I wait.

Before I even had time to zip up my bag, I was floored with something metal pressed to the side of my head.

What the hell?

My defensive instincts kicked in and I instantly started analyzing my options.

It was definitely a man; his crotch was pressed against my back making it pretty obvious. He was big, probably about 250lbs. Judging by how he had pinned my arms behind my back, he had definitely been through some training.

Over all… I could take him.

I twisted my hips making him lose his grip on my wrists. I grabbed him by the elbow and used that leverage to throw him over me, so that we were lying face to face on the concrete. Before he had time to collect himself I jumped up and took a step away from him. I looked down to see who my attacker was.

“Caleb?”
