The halls were crowded with students. I checked my phone to see the time. 7:25. According to my schedule class started at 7:42. I had enough time to go to my locker and get settled in.

I looked at my schedule. My locker number was 1c101. I began to walk down the hallway looking for my locker.

Mystic Falls kids were so inconsiderate. At least ten kids hit into me and didn't even say sorry or even make eye contact. Ugh, pricks.

After what felt like several minutes I finally found my locker. I put in the combination and it popped open.

"Newbie, huh?" said a voice.

I nearly jumped. Standing against the locker next to me was a girl who looked my age. She was tall, with curly chestnut hair and green eyes. She wore black leggings and a long red cardigan. She smiled at me, and somehow I felt like I was gonna make a friend.
"Y-yeah." I said.
"No need to stutter. I'm Morgan De Luca." she greeted me, shaking my hand.
"Joanna Donovan." I replied with a smile.
"You're the sheriff's kid!" Morgan exclaimed.
I looked down in embarrassment. "How'd you know?"
Morgan scoffed. "I know the Donovan clan quite well. People were saying his daughter was gonna move in with him."
"Oh." I bit my lip.
"Well, welcome to Mystic Falls. I guess I'll be your guide. I wouldn't want you to make a fool of yourself."
Damn. It looks like my first day wouldn't be so bad after all.

.     .     .

"Who can tell me the major causes of the Civil War?" Mr. Saunders, my history teacher, asked.

I raised my hand up high. "New girl." he called on me.

I rolled my eyes in irritation. "It's Joanna."
Mr. Saunders laughed to himself. "Oh, sorry. I'm sort of losing my memory, you'll have to forgive me."

"It's fine. And one of the most well known causes of the Civil War was slavery and the cruel treatment of African-Americans in the South." I explained.

"Good answer, new girl, good answer. Can anyone give me something else?"
Nothing.
"Mr. Salvatore."

I turned around. A tall muscular boy with ghostly pale skin and combed back brown hair sat up in his chair. "Economic differences between the North and the South."

Mr. Saunders looked impressed. "That's correct."

I looked back at the boy. He wore a dark blue ring lined with silver. A large S was engraved in the center. He had dark hallow eyes, almost glass-like. He had strong distinct features. Although he had no expression, he was quite handsome. I looked down at his paper, trying to find a name. On the heading I found the name Stefan Salvatore. Handsome name for a handsome guy.

I looked back up and noticed that his glass eyes were on me, too.

STEFAN

The girl looks away. She seems embarrassed, but I don't mind. I'm used to little things like that.

It's been twenty years. Twenty years. Even though she didn't love me as she did has once did before her death, I still loved her. I never stopped loving her.

Damon was hurt maybe even more than I was. He went away about ten years ago, he hasn't been back since. He said he needed "time for himself".

The girl, Joanna, was the sheriffs daughter, or so i've heard. The sheriff was an old friend of mine. We went to high school together. And now i'm back. I want things to go back to normal.

But life for a vampire isn't normal.

I've been seventeen since 1864. I was changed by Katharine, the one girl I thought I could ever love. She was different. I was drawn to her. And so was Damon.

But I thought I lost her. For many years, in fact. Then Elena came along.

And that's where it all started.

Elena died twenty years ago. I was in love with her friend Caroline, another vampire, but I couldn't bare to see her leave. Every memory I had of her flashed through my mind.

Joanna was the definition of beauty. Her dark blonde tresses spilled perfectly over her shoulders. Her blue eyes caught my attention the second she turned around. Her olive skin was smooth and glowing. She was the spitting image of Matt. But that didn't stop me from feeling a strong attraction to her.

I have loved a human before, and I can do it again.

JOANNA

The bell rang about twenty minutes later. I left class in a haze. I had lunch next, and I was starving. Even though it was only fifth period, it felt like so much longer.

Once I bought my lunch, I walked into the cafeteria. It was a melting pot of students. Being the new girl, this was the stereotypical oh fuck who am i gonna sit with moment.

There was a table of girls, some of whom had cheerleading uniforms. They were laughing and whispering things to eachother. I'd never be that, for sure.

I turned around and hit into something hard. My juice box fell onto the floor. I gasped and then looked up. It was Stefan. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry!"

He bent down and picked it up. "It's fine. I should work on properly introducing myself."

I smiled and took the juice box from him. "Thanks. I'm Joanna."

He smiled back. "I'm Stefan."

"Nice to meet you."

"Same to you. I like that." He gestured to the gold locket poking out of my sweatshirt.

"Oh, thanks."

Stefan must have been nearly ten inches taller than me. He wore a black t shirt and jeans. Through his shirt I could almost sense he had abs. Then I noticed the ring once again. "I like you ring."

He looked down at it. "Thank you. It's an old family heirloom."

"It's quite unique."

"I suppose that's what you're like."

"What do you mean?"

"Unique."

My lips twisted into a grin and became lost in the world of his eyes.
