First Thoughts
The story your about to read will take you to the furthest reaches of space and time on an epic journey, filled with unimaginable, sometimes terrifying, things and places that will defy reasoning and what's possible. Although it may sound a fantasy tale it's not your typical story filled with fairies and wizards, some things at times may resemble magical beings, this is certainly no fairytale.
It will pull at your heart strings with moments of absolute desperation, darkened solitude, will, and in the end, a true sense of life. At times, make you weep.
You will see spectacular worlds through my words, so unbelievable and mystifying you couldn't imagine such realms even in your deepest dreams.
This is no familiar story, certainly no ordinary journey traveled. It's much, much more because it's all astonishingly true. I know, because it's my life's story. My personal accounts of a voyage thousands of years in the making.
Sitting near the clouds atop a mountain overlooking a decimated landscape waiting for the emergence of the sun's morning rays, I sit and wait, doing nothing more than putting words to paper while a savage war rages.
I was forced here by a beloved friend to save you, and everything that would come before and after.
In order for you to understand the journey, sacrifices made, and what was truly lost for your ultimate gain, I must take you back to the beginning where it all started so long ago.
My name is Max Starr, and this is my extraordinary tale....
Chapter 1
Disturbed image
Frozen cold air, howling winter wind, ice like nails, and a moon bleeding from the inside are what I remember about the night that would send me into a place of deep darkness. Although I was only eleven years old when it happened, I remember it vividly...
My eyes closed tight, the warm covers on my wooden bed pulled over my curled up body. The crackling fire from the fireplace and the howl of the winter winds passing my window filled my ears as I faded away in the warm embrace of the red blanket my mother knitted. Suddenly, a sharp jolt rocked the house, pulled me out of my warm bed in complete panic.
The jolt was brief and violent. Cracks formed quickly in the walls all around the room. Window glass burst into pieces as the frigid air enveloped the room. I wanted to jump out of bed to safety. But, at the time, I was unable to convince my young body to move. leaving my exposed skin vulnerable to the exploding shards of glass.
The winter air rushing in overwhelmed my senses, squeezing every ounce of warmth away from my body.
Panic set in as I struggled to free the covers that tightly incased my lower half. I struggled for a few seconds, felt like eternity. Eventually I broke free from the grip of the warm embrace.
Standing wasn't easy. My legs took on a mind of their own, quivered relentlessly. Frozen air rushed in from the window which certainly didn't help.
The deafening sound of the house rocking, glass breaking, wood splitting, and my chattering body all gave way to complete silence. It was eerie. I recall the small hairs on the back of my neck gradually moving upwards. The silence was gripping, captivating my imagination.
I wanted to scream for my parents, letting them know I needed them, but the grip of fear was too strong, holding me tightly while I stood in shock.
Something caught the corner of my vision and my full attention as I finally managed to free myself. A faint light crept through the darkness of the cold winter night. I cautiously walked over to the window, keeping a watchful eye on the hundreds of shards of glass adorning the wood floor. Relying solely on tip-toes to get to the window, I managed to make it without any penetrating my vulnerable skin. It was a huge accomplishment for me at the time. I remember that moment well, I was a scared boy, like most. But at that moment, I was proud of myself for being brave for the first times in my memory.
