Iris's POV

I was having breakfast in the dining hall with some of my friends and then Kim, my best friend, said something to me, "Look over there at your crush", giving me a big smile while looking at me.

I raised my right brow with a curious face, I was thinking about Crush as in the "soda."

I thought someone came to give me my favorite soda. I was extremely happy to drink some Crush right now because I haven't had any soda in a very long time.

I was looking at Kim but she was looking at the other direction. I was quite curious so I turned around, and it was just Austin and his group of friends.

Austin, one of the most popular guys in school and a playboy but happens to be my guy best friend.

My dream guy at 6'2, honey brown hair, plays football, hazel eyes, you can name it all.

I was quite disappointed that it wasn't soda but now I'm more embarrassed by him seeing me.

Now that I know what kind of crush Kim was talking about, I quickly turned my head back and laid my head on the table.

We were sitting in a circle table and I had my back towards Austin, so the only person that couldn't see him was me while everyone turned looking at his direction.

"Hey Austin, over here!", Kim yelled while waving at him.

I looked at her dead in the eyes and whispering to her to stop looking and to shut up.

Right after that, Kim told me that he was coming this way.

"Shit, I hate you, Kim," I said while shaking my head.

I didn't want him to see me because I look horrifying with my messy bed hair and I had no makeup on.

I quickly put on my hoodie to hide my messy hair.

I'm just your typical Hmong girl at the height of 5'4, brown medium length hair, dark brown eyes, and light tan skin.

Yes, I had a crush on him since middle school but I never made a move. I kept everything as it was and was there for him as a friend, a close friend.

Yes, I friend zone him.

I was quite sad though because now he does have a beautiful girlfriend. Let's not think about that would we, I hated myself for not opening up more. I wanted him to be happy and so I supported him and any of his relationships.

I could hear his footsteps coming closer. I closed my eyes, squeezing them closed and then opening them again. I was going to play it off like I was cool with everything. I inhaled and exhale for a couple seconds as he was getting closer.

I turned around and greeted him, "Hey best friend!" with a fake smile.

He was about two steps away and I was thinking about why I didn't date this handsome guy.

I knew that I couldn't date him because he was a different race. My father forbids me from dating anyone other than my own race. I was devastated about it but, I knew I had to listen to my dad.

I didn't really understand why I couldn't date someone that was another race but I listened to my father.

There are times where I want to open up and go against my dad, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I knew that I can't listen to my heart because I wanted the best for my parents and followed their every rule.

"Hello, Iris... Iris... Iris...," said Austin while waving his hands in front of my face.

I snapped out of it and brought myself back from my thoughts and brought my eyes back to him.

"Oh sorry, I spaced out a bit thinking about something important that I have to do," I said to him and giving him a small smile.

I was drawn to him and his handsome featured face, I hated him for being so attractive.

He kept looking into my eyes as I was looking at him, I broke eye contact with him and looked down at the floor.

I sometimes wondered if he would date me, or had a thought about it.

I didn't want to be there anymore with him around, it always gets so awkward.

so I made an excuse to him, "I have to go do something important so I'll see you next time okay," giving him a smile.

I turned back and stood up, now in front of my friends glaring at Kim.

I hugged everyone around the table. Kim was the last person I hugged and I whispered in her ear, "You're gonna get it when you come back."

I said my goodbyes and walked back to my dorm.
