The crack of a baton silenced the small group of men that stood in the darkened alley. They turned to see a small figure, dressed in all black with their faced covered. One man of the group glanced at the baton then to the face of the unknown person.

"Hey boss, I think we should leave." One man whispered, slowly backing away.

"Shut it, Jay. This is our turf and they messed with the wrong group." Their leader snapped, taking a few steps toward the masked person.

"Who the hell gave you the right to walk on my turf carrying a damn stick like you own the place? Huh?" He yelled, the gap between them closing.

As he got within arm's reach of the masked figure, the unknown figure whipped the baton against the man's knee. The gang leader fell and tried to grab the figure's leg but was astonished to find them not there. When he got up and turned around, the baton connected with his chin. The sound of a loud crack and yell caused the one of the men to pull out a gun and open fire.

Running out of bullets, they looked up in fear as the figure walked toward them as if in perfect shape. They ran the other direction and when they turned the corner, the figure was waiting. When they tried to run back to their original area, a shot went off. One fell to the ground, screaming as they held their leg. The last one was met by the end of the baton, causing them to pass out from lack of oxygen.

Three men were loaded into ambulances as a detective talked to the chief policewoman.

"Three gang members were called in around this area. We find them here, all tied up and in pretty shitty condition." She explained.

"Define shitty condition?" The detective asked.

"Person one, suffering from broke jaw and chin. Person two, bullet in calf. Person three, unconscious from lack of oxygen. There's a bruise on the front of his throat, maybe hit with something." She explained.

The detective sighed and clicked his pen against his clipboard. As he walked up the alley he found the photographer taking a picture of something on the wall. Not being able to see it, he beckoned the photographer over to him. After taking the camera and looking at the photo he said, "I know who did this."

"Who?" The woman asked sternly.

"They're called The Shadow. They get business down then call us to get the bad guys." He explained.

"So a vigilante?" She questioned, not taking it seriously.

He gave her a nod and her face exposed shock. "You gotta be shitting me, I thought that was a joke."

"Nope. They're been doing their work for some time now. Three months I think." He went on as he started back to his car.

"Well isn't there some lookout for them?" She persisted, following him.

"We would but we've got no pictures. This person works during the night. They sneak around the shadows. You know, the name." He continued.

"What about the calls-"

"Whoever this is somehow has a police radio that they call with." He continued further, getting into his car.

"Well I'm going to find this... Whatever this is." She said angrily.

"Kyla, welcome to Chicago. A place where shit happens but we can't do shit about it." He said as he broke back to the station.

"Not if I can help it." She grumbled.

After letting her K9 into her vehicle she slammed the door behind her and broke back to the station, constantly thinking about the picture. Whoever this Shadow was liked to leave a mark. A spray painted black circle that was filled in messily.
