It was awfully quiet in the Carter household.
That was a sentence nobody ever thought would exist, usually there was always some sort of noise going on. Whether it be George messing around with a beat, Ian randomly singing songs that would get stuck in his head, the air conditioner buzzing in the back, or even the coffee maker dripping in the kitchen.
But there wasn't a sound, not a peep.
That is, until George woke up. He groaned, stretching underneath the covers and reaching out to cuddle with his lover, Ian. ... Who wasn't in the bed.
This confused him for a second, seeing as how even though Ian would wake up earlier, he'd usually stay in bed and wait for him to awake as well. Sitting up, he furrowed his brows, his tired mind trying to piece things together, until he looked to the door and saw that it was wide open.
Figuring Ian had gotten up, George stumbled out of the bed and decided to look for him.
He checked the kitchen first, but there wasn't a sign that Ian been in there at all. Not even the coffee maker was on. George yawned, and lazily sombered to the machine and started it up. If he was gonna go on a boyfriend hunt, he at least had to be awake.
Once the coffee was made, he made a cup for the other, thinking he was probably just as tired as him. Taking a sip out of the freshly brewed cup of joe, he continued on his little scavenger hunt.
However, his search was short lived when he heard a stir from the guest bedroom. Well... it wasn't really a guest bedroom now.
"Ohhh..." he thought, a warm grin came across his face as he tiptoed towards the slightly jarred room. Peeking in, he could see a familiar figure sitting the rocking chair beside newly built crib (which took forever to build due to it being from IKEA. ... fucking IKEA).
Letting his eyes focus to the dark lighting, George could see Ian, cradling the small newborn wrapped up in his arms . He looked so exhausted, but immensely content at the same time. Hearing a little whimper escape from the blankets caused the brunette to tense a little and immediately attempt to comfort the child.
"Shhh," Ian cooed, placing the stirring child on his shoulder, gently rubbing his fragile back, rocking back and forth slowly, "It's okay... Daddy's here, and I'll protect you~"
Seeing this side of the American was such a treat. It was so sickeningly sweet and such a heartthrob to see him nurturing a baby, and so different from his normal obscure behavior. That didn't mean that he wasn't loving, but you'd need to dig a little deeper to get to that soft side.
Soon enough, the faint fussing quickly dissipated and the sound of gentle snoring filled the quiet atmosphere. A satisfied and elated smirk appeared on his thin lips before he planted a kiss on the newborn's cheek.
Upon further viewing, you couldn't help but notice his behavior as... admirable. George was confident that he wouldn't be able to think, or even be able to do some of the things Ian did to care for the child, such as changing. Hell, he was even clumsy when it came to holding the baby. But other things came to him naturally such as singing the child to sleep, rocking and feeding.
Their talents made them a team, depending on each other when they needed a bit of support.
Unable to keep himself hidden, George lightly pushed the door open as he leaned on the wooden frame. Allowing it to make a creaking noise, Ian turned towards the door to see his lover smiling back at him.
"Oh, I see you're awake now," Ian spoke in a soft tone, loud enough for George to hear, but quiet enough to keep the baby sleep.
Chuckling, the raven haired sauntered in and approached the taller man, handing him the still warm cup of coffee. He then stood up on his toes as the other leaned down a bit, sharing a tender kiss.
"How long have you been here? Did he wake up early?" George looked at the peaceful face of their precious kid and gently stroked his soft cheek. He then shifted his gaze to Ian, seeing the bags underneath his eyes past his horn rimmed glasses. Ian tried to smile through his tired gaze as he replied, "Did I wake up early? Yeah. From him? No."
That confused the smaller man. Yawning, Ian moved towards the crib and placed the child in carefully. Leaning over and observing the child's chest moving up and down with every breath.
"I... I was scared."
Walking over beside him, George joined him in watching their kid breath.
"Of what?"
"Well," Ian adjusted his glasses as he continued, "I don't really know... I guess because he's so fragile right now... scares me. I mean, what if something happens? Like something big, and we're not there? I dunno, I'm probably just over-thinking it."
Reaching down, the brunette traced the creases in the infant's palm with his fingers tips until his tiny hand grasped his finger. It melted George's heart, but of course, he wouldn't admit that right now.
"I mean... Don'tcha just kinda think about that scary shit? Y'know, as a parent?"
But he understood what he meant.
Of course, George was worried about those sort of things, even more so since he was especially new to care-giving. Ian had more experience, what with helping raise having two younger brothers, so he was a completely left in the dust in "not knowing". Not only that, but the whole "seizure issue" always popped up into his head.
What if the kid has the same problem as him?
He knew that it would be hard to deal with if that was the case. Hell, he was struggling. And no child deserves to go through what he did, but there was always that possibility. While George like to think that he'd be prepared and know what to do, he always has that doubting thought in the back of his head that screams he wouldn't be able to do anything.
Leaning up against Ian, George meekly responded.
"Yeah... I do."
They knelt in silence for a moment, still listening to the soft breaths of the sleeping innocence before them.
"I'm pretty sure that's normal though. That'd be pretty messed up if you didn't worry, amirte?"
George felt Ian wrap his free arm around his waist and pull him gently to his side. Ian's sleepy hazel eyes met his dim coffee ones.
"We'll get the hang of this soon."
The brunette left a small kiss against his lover's forehead, allowing him to snuggle close to him.
"... Hey, kid."
George gently stroked the baby's cheek, as he gingerly smiled.
"You're gonna be great."
