Zen's POV
Mitsuhide, Kiki and I just heard. Clarines kingdom was joining forces with Tonbourn to defeat their foe, the Mountain Lions, the thieving group of vigilantes that steal food and supplies from their castle and their people.
"Why do we have to go?" I whined with my head planted my my desk.
"Because Zen," Mitsuhide explained calmly, "we formed a peace treaty with Tonbourn in order for our troops to have better training grounds, well that and, Tonbourn would always kick our butts for any reason they can come up with." He scratched the back of his neck, noticing he wasn't getting anywhere with that he slipped out of my office in an awkward fashion.
"So Zen," Kiki turned to face me, "I heard you put us on the front line alongside you when we attack their fort tomorrow?" She looked highly unamused when I gave her a look that told her those rumors were true. "Oh," was all she had to say when she turned and left the room as well. I waved goodbye to them, before returning to the mountains of paperwork, just as I got truly into it the door swung open, making me jump out of my seat.
"Am I interrupting?" My older brother, King Izana asked practically floating through the office to the balcony behind my desk, "join me for a drink." He said, I really wanted to refuse but seeming as Izana looked to have liable information, I stuck around.
"Your going on the front line?" Izana repeated Kiki's earlier question, "do you know how dangerous that is?" Izana kept a steady voice but looked highly concerned. I looked at him in confusion. Was he trying to imply that I wasn't ready? What are a few mountain monkeys gonna do to a fine, young prince such as myself? Once I heard my own arrogant thoughts I began to slightly worry.
"Lord brother," I began slowly, choosing my words carefully around the newly appointed King, "you truly need not worry, I'm more then capable to handle a few men attacking with sticks and stones, not to mention I also heard you would be there,"
"Only to spectate." The King looked away, his wife forced him to go, so she knew his soldiers would be safe.
"Lord brother," I said again, "I wish you'd give me a chance. I wouldn't be saying this if it was not the first time you second guessed my abilities." My sarcastic smile faded and my eyebrows slanted.
"Getting angry are we?" Izana's own brows rose. "I trust you, that's all there is to it, right?" Izana disliked the anger I felt towards him, over small details.
The Next Morning
In the Forest of Tonbourn, the place with the most Lion activity.
The captain of the foreign guard signaled to his soldiers to spring on his mark. Clarines's captain did the same to his soldiers. All was quiet until a shriek was heard from the treetops and they dropped on us like wild jungle cats.
"Surprise attack? Not fair, they beat us to it!" Mitsuhide teased while he was fending off three men with long twisted hair and paint on their faces.
"No time for jokes!" I responded, knocking back two of my own. I was slashing through their lines completely focused on the battle until my eyes subconsciously looked up and saw a mysterious figure jump through the trees above us, that figure was followed by another. I signaled to Mitsuhide to give me a boost, he did, and I climbed over to another branch then another. I had the quick figure in sight until a strong shove pushed me down onto a grassy mound below. The one who pushed me jumped down and removed their tan hood with one swift movement of their black gloved hands. The action revealed a black haired boy glaring down at me with greenish cat eyes,
"Who are you?" He questioned suspiciously, narrowing his eyes further.
"Why must I answer? You first," I shot back with venom on my tongue.
"The name's Obi," I narrowed my eyes at him. He bowed in my direction, then the other figure I saw earlier jumped down behind Obi. They whispered something inaudible in his ear. "Okay, I'll kill him for you," he glanced at me briefly, "ha just kidding master, don't look so serious!" Obi was laughing and joking around, he spun on his heels and told his friend, "you must go to your hut. Your father would kill me if he knew you were out." The figure nodded but didn't move, making Obi sigh then he turned back to me, "So Master, tell me, what's your name it's only fair, I told you mine."
He did have a point. Though, how could I trust a seemingly criminal man? "Zen." I muttered under my breath.
"What? Oh, Zen!" He appeared as if he was completely unaware of the carnage around us. "Nah I like master much more, Master, judging by your cloths you are from, the, Clarines army huh?" I didn't know what to say. He must know the Tonbourn army pretty well to distinguish our uniforms.
"How could you tell, both Clarines and Tonbourn soldiers are here?" I asked, truly wanting to know.
"Well, Master, I guess you'll never know." All this time I've been still on the mound Obi pushed me onto. My side hurt when I moved. Once I gained the courage to move, I yelped in pain as manly as I could. The person behind Obi walked over to me and looked and my side, removing her white hood, showed her beautiful green eyes and apple like red hair, she pulled up my shirt only to examine my side further then said back to Obi,
"You snapped one of his ribs, you idiot." Chuckling a little between words,
"So who are you then?" I had to ask with wonder in my eyes, she looked into mine, smiled shyly and said,
"I'm Shirayuki, it's nice to meet you, Zen."
