In the time when the stars still shone,
There was me, and myself, and I.
But then, somewhen, in the tangle of years
Your train arrived from cities gone by.
There was a time, as things often go,
when 'I' became 'we' became 'us'.
But nothing was ever made to last
And you caught that final bus
Away from this city of dust
Into the great unknowable sky.
And left me asleep with a ticket stub -
All I had to remember you by.
And when the moon makes her pass
Across the velvet blue and shining glass
Sitting upon the dew-strewn grass
I see your silhouette traversing that pond
Fishing for stars in the great beyond.
