A golden yellow dress hung on the back of the door to my room, it looked identical to the dress from the Disney movie 'Beauty and the beast'. Grabbing the dress I shoved in into the back of the closet as if not seeing it made it seem less real. Mr. Baron had told me that if I had any questions about him I was to ask him, I’d lied and said I had no questions. There was no way this could be true can there? I mean a demon living in form of a hot rich guy? I couldn’t help but wonder if Cal was a demon too, or all the other men who were here last night. Curling up on the soft lavender scented bed, I tried to straighten out my thoughts but it seemed nearly impossible. Too many questions and ‘what ifs’ kept me from relaxing. Bell hadn’t come to see her today, but Lidia slid a note under her door earlier apologizing for leaving me with more questions than answers. The thought of Lidia only made me more confused, why had she been scared when I said Mr. Baron had smelt me and told me he needed me? All the questions and things that still didn’t make sense were becoming over whelming. They drained all my energy leaving me exhausted. Soon my eye lids became too heavy to hold open anymore and the softness of the bed coaxing me into sleep didn’t help as I fell asleep.
When I woke up the sun was setting outside my window and the room smelt delicious. A trey with a bowl of soup and some buns sat on the stand next to the bed. It unnerved me that someone came in while I was asleep but I was also very hungry. I ate the soup and the buns followed by a hot shower. I searched the closet for something I would’ve liked to wear but all I could find was a knee length purple skirt, a white cardigan and a rosy pink tank top. I wasn’t a girl to wear skirts but it was better than nothing. I checked the door knob to see if it was unlock and to my surprise it was. Peeking my head into the long hall I noticed I was at the end of the hall. The sound of my bare feet slapping the hard wood was the only sound I could hear in the house, but I knew I wasn’t alone. The silence was almost eerie. The lights in the hallway were off, but light from Mr. Barons’ office and the moon provided enough light for me to make out where I was going. I was looking for the dining room, from there I could find my way back to the wonderful library. I couldn’t help but feel like I was being watched, and I probably was. The size of the house is ridiculous; it resembled a maze with all the doors in it. Little shelves were places along the walls with candles on them, shadows danced on the walls. The big mahogany doors with carvings of angels and demons that led into Mr. Barons’ office looked like the carvings were actually fighting in the candle light. The detail in the wood was astonishing, reaching my hand out to touch a demon with a dog like face the door creaked open. Not wanting to risk getting caught I kept wondering down the hall. Eventually I found the dining hall, the same long table sat in the centre with little bowls of fruit on it. I grabbed a green apple and went to the library following the same halls the girl dressed as Rapunzel lead me down the night before. Large arches that framed each entrance welcomed me into the room. Moon light lit up the center of the room, pieces of dust floated through the air. Books covered every piece of shelf, the floor boards creaked under my feet while I searched for the stairway leading to the second floor. I didn’t find the same staircase as before, the first was in between two shelves this one was framed but a big arch just like the main door.
I sat in the same place I did last night in the corner of an antique looking sofa. It was a red color with gold yellow trim and designs on it. The legs were made of wood but not as dark as the arches and shelves. For an antique it was surprisingly comfortable, the cushions modeled to my body sucking me in. The Moon was beginning to wane while stars twinkled around it, we mustn’t be very close to a city, the stars are never this bright in the city. The blinking light of a satellite drifted across the massive skylight,
“One of the girls told me you weren’t in your room I thought you might come here,” His voice made me jump, but didn’t bring a wave of fear, “your room was left open and you didn’t try to escape. Why not?” I wasn’t sure how to answer because I wasn’t even sure why escaping hadn’t crossed my mind. Maybe it was the threat that if I left they would kill me or maybe I just wanted to be anywhere but in that room.
“I don’t know, it didn’t even occur to me that I could’ve escaped right then and there. I wanted to come back here, maybe find a book.” I sat up slowly and looked at him, he was dressed casually like he was when I first saw him, jeans that were hanging low on his hips, a grey button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. His dirty blond hair looked browner in the dark lighting, he face was shadowed by his hair, but his eyes looked like they were glowing, they’re color unlike any eye color I’d ever seen before. An icy blue with white edges made his pupils look like smudges of charcoal. He walked forward and sat next to me on the sofa, it whined under his weight but he didn’t look like he weighed a lot. His eyes were impossible to look away from almost hypnotic, until he began talking again.
“Normally I would consider it bad behavior for a new girl to just wonder this house alone but seeing you did no harm and all you’ve done is watch the sky I will let it slide,” it bothered me that he talk to me like I was a child.
“What do you mean ‘this house’?” He said it like there was more than one.
“I have more than one house, this is just the biggest. Once in a while all the girls will get together here and visit but not often do I come here unless I need to find more girls or business, next week after the ball you'll return back to my house with me.” I sat quietly and let this news sink in,
“So where are we right now then? Who else stays at your other house?” There had to be other girls going to the house too right? I couldn’t be the only one.
“A girl named Tessa will be coming with us but she will only be there for a couple weeks then it will just be you and me.” Only one girl was coming with us? But almost thirty lived in this monster house? I was going to be living alone in a house with a demon that lives off my blood…great
