The ACL Injury
(For RWS: Definition Text)

The term ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. This ligament is located at each knee joining the front of the tibia and the back of the femur whose function is to prevent  hyperextension of the knee. When this ligament is subject to tearing, it causes the injury which we call the ACL injury.

The ACL injury commonly happens to athletes playing high-intensity sports. They injure their ACLs by either having physical contact with the other players or through non-contact mechanisms such as pivoting, sidestepping, awkward landings and many more. Having a serious ACL injury would need to require a surgery to recover the normal functions of the knee. The most common surgery for this is the knee arthroscopy. This surgery is usually accompanied by a physical theraphy for a period of 6 to 12 months, depending on the severity of the sprain of the ligament. Although this injury is difficult to predict, its occurence may be made less likely if an individual warms up before playing or do strength training which make the muscles firmer.
