'Are you absolutely sure you want to walk back to the apartment by yourself, if you wait in the staff room for a hour I can give you a lift back now I have my licence for over here too.' Cara asked her friend and roommate for a third time. Karlie rolled her eyes at her British friend, she had moved to New York four years ago at the tender age of 16 to enroll in fashion school and then NYU. Now at 20 she knew the city like the back of her hand; she knew where to avoid by now.
'I want to walk home, you know how much I love the city at night and besides you know Lily will be waiting up for us to get in. If either of us aren't back within 20 minutes of finishing our shift you know she'll go all mom like and phone us constantly, so I will be fine.'
Karlie shut her locker and clocked out of work leaving her friend to finish her shift. Although the young woman had a reason for not staying behind to wait, that reason was a mere block away sleeping rough. It all happened a week ago, when she first started her new job.
'I am going to drop you off here, I have a lecture and I cannot be late because I am TA-ing again today. Are you going to be alright walking the rest of the way?' Lily leaned over a quite nervous Karlie and opened her door for her, kissing her on the cheek the same way a mother would do. 'You'll be fine, you know Cara already she'll show you the ropes. Go or you're going to be late...'
No sooner as she got out of the car Lily had sped off, in her rushed way. Always scared and worried she would be late, it made both Karlie and Cara laugh because Lily was always a half hour early for everything.
The young woman pushed her way through a crowd of pedestrians who were all rushing to various events, she was so nervous she didn't notice the crowd in front of her had stopped suddenly until she bumped into a grumpy overweight man and ended up with his unpleasant armpit in her face. Then she heard it, the voice of an angel coming from the center of the crowd. A homeless woman, with pretty blue eyes and a beat up guitar had managed to ease Karlie's nerves with one simple lyric out of a song she had never heard before.
'I'm walking fast through the traffic lights, busy streets and busy lives.
And all we know is touch and go,
We are alone with our changing minds, we fall in love till it hurts or bleeds or fades in time.
And I never saw you coming, and I'll never be the same.
You come around and the amour falls, pierce the room like a cannonball.
Now all we know is don't let go, we are alone just you and me up in your room and our slates are clean.
Just twin fire signs, four blue eyes.
So you were never a saint, and I've loved in shades of wrong.
We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts.
But this love is brave and wild.'
Karlie didn't get to hear the rest of the beautiful song because Lily called her to make sure she got to work safe, but everyday and night since the young girl made sure to see the homeless Angel and bring her coffee and cookies. And she had decided in the mere seven days she had known the homeless girl that tonight she would ask her for her name and hopefully her story.
'You know if I didn't know better I would say you're stalking me, but you can hardly stalk a homeless girl. What did you bring me this time, oh I hope it's more of those delicious cookies' Karlie had been in a world of her own and hadn't even noticed she had got to the corner where her new friend slept. 'Shit you scared the life out of me, I was daydreaming. I brought you cookies and hot chocolate, before I give them you what's your name?'
The Homeless girl hesitated before grinning and pulling her blanket up more.
'Swift, Taylor Swift. What's yours?'
Karlie returned the smile, a beautiful name for a beautiful Angel. 'Kloss, Karlie Kloss. So Taylor tell me how you got here while we share cookies.'
Hi guys right so this chapter was really rough when I wrote my first draft and I tried so hard to edit it to make it good, but I admitted defeat with it and wrote the rest of the story so it would be even better. Just keep in mind I haven't written properly in months. I will probably update tomorrow. Side note, I did make a cover for this that I uploaded via my laptop but it wasn't showing up on my app, so can y'all let me know if it hasn't got a cover so I can sort it.
