Run. That was the last thing that came off of Christian's breath. I could still hear his voice in my head. Tears were streaming down my face uncontrollably, they were making it hard to see what was ahead of me, but I had to keep going. I didn't know where I was running to or what I was running from. But, I knew that I couldn't go back.
It felt like I had been running for hours, but it had only been a few minutes. I didn't understand. Why had we been running. Who was chasing us? Why had they taken him? There were so many questions running through my head that I knew I had to get answered. But I couldn't think of that right now. I had to get somewhere safe, somewhere I knew no one could find me.
I remembered an old house that Christian and I had found. It was far out in the middle of the woods where it had been abandoned for years. We thought that if it was out far enough, no one would be able to find it. I was hoping that nobody had.
That was the only other place that I felt entirely safe other than at home. Christian and I had gone out to that house everyday after school and even on the weekends to make it our new hangout place. We cleaned the whole thing up and made it look new again. We eventually got cheap furniture at yard sales and discount stores that would sell them to us. We were the only two who knew about it and the only two who ever went there.
As the years went by and we had gotten older, we both got jobs and were busy with school, that we didn't go to the house anymore. We drifted apart and our friendship eventually was just gone. He was gone. I couldn't think of that right now. I needed to focus on where I was going and try to remember where the house was.
Something was following me. I turned around to look but couldn't see anyone. I knew that this wasn't just my imagination, because right as I was turning back around, I saw her. Out of the corner of my eye. I might have barely saw her, but I saw her. There were a million things going through my mind on what to do, but all I could possibly do is to keep running.
The little house that we had built together came into view. All of the memories came flooding back of us. I could feel the tears wanting to come back, but I wasn't going to let them. I picked up my pace and ran even faster, thinking that once I got inside I would be safe.
To my disappointment, when I got to the door it was locked. I had forgotten that the last time that we left, Christian had put a lock on it. I had walked around the house trying to see if any windows were open or if there was anyway I could get inside without having to break anything. Whoever was chasing me was gone now. I couldn't see her anymore or hear her.
After going around the house about what felt like a thousand times, I sat down in front of the door. I looked around at my surroundings. I saw the grass as it moved with the wind and the clouds of dirt that blowed into your face when you were too low to the ground. I glimpsed to my left and saw the little flower pot that Christian had brought back one day; the flowers now dead and dry.
I smiled remembering that I had just finished putting the rest of the furniture in the house when he pulled up in his car, kicking up the dust as always. He jumped out and put the flowers down right on the side of the door. I hadn't noticed what kind of flowers they were, until he came into the house.
"Dwarf Pamilas, your favorite," he said with a huge grin on his face."I thought that they would add the perfect touch to the place."
He was right, they did. Christian knew me better than anyone, even better than I knew myself. After that day, we grew closer. We started falling for each other.
It took me a second to realize that I was crying again. But then something hit me. Christian had put a spare key in that flower pot. I grabbed the pot and started to dig through the hard and dry soil until I found the key. I stood up and inserted the key into the door handle. I didn't know if I was mentally prepared to see something that I would bring back so many memories. With all of my uncertainty, I turned the key and the door swung open.
