*Olivia Lagoon Pov*
"Hey!...Hey!...Olivia!...OLIVIA!" I snap my head up from where I had been snoozing. I looked up to see my mother shaking my arm furiously. "Olivia! Your going to be late for your football* tryouts if you keep sleeping all day!" The thought clicked in my head. I wasn't even dressed for practice. I bluntly replied with "O-okay Mom thanks for waking me up." I didn't take long for me to jump out of my chair and run to my room. I slipped on my team shorts and shirt. I slipped on my socks and sneakers. I grabbed the nearest empty backpack and packed my cleats and a water bottle. I grabbed my football* and ran downstairs.
I grabbed a granola bar and rapidly pulled at the sealed bar until the wrapper tore open. I took a bite out of it and called for my mother. "I'm ready mum!" I yelled up the stairs with a full mouth.
My mum came running down the stairs "about time." She said almost annoyed. I rolled my eyes and flung the door open. I raced to the car and leaned against the door panting. I could feel the thrumming of my heart against my chest. I peeked through the car window and saw a shiny green box in the corner. My mum met me at the car and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Happy Early birthday Olivia." She unlocked the door and climbed inside. I did the same.
My mum started the car and muttered under her breath. "Eleven years tomorrow." She said it so quietly I don't think I was meant to hear it.
Awkward silence fell around the car as we drove to our destination. I shifted in my seat from uneasiness.
"Mum?" I asked
"Yes, Olivia?" She replied.
"What's so special about me turning eleven?" I asked. She fell silent. I could tell she was hiding something but I couldn't place my finger on it.
"Olivia." She mumbled. "It's a big surprise." She said her tone much more calm and gentle.
After a few seconds, she chuckled to herself.
"What?!?!" I asked annoyed at her secrecy.
"Olivia, you have no idea how big of a surprise your present will be."
I looked in the back at the green box. It didn't look very unordinary it looked like your average present.
"What's in the box?"
My mum's finger tightened against the steering wheel. "Books" she said uneasily. I cocked my head to the side. "Books?" My mum nodded.
They must be some expensive books of they were that important. When we finally got to football* tryouts I had forgotten the whole conversation.
Football*: The American term is soccer.
